Biography

Short Description

Mary Zheng Xu is venerated in the Catholic Church as one of the Martyr Saints of China. She was a Chinese laywoman who lived in the closing years of the Qing dynasty. Catholicism had been present in China for centuries by her lifetime, with communities established in various regions through successive waves of missionary activity. Native Chinese Catholics formed the majority of the Church in the country, often living in Catholic villages or family networks that had maintained the faith across generations despite periodic official restrictions and local hostility.

In 1900 the Boxer Rebellion erupted in northern China. The Yihetuan, or Boxers, combined martial arts, folk religion, and anti-foreign sentiment. They particularly attacked Christian missions and Chinese Christians, whom they accused of undermining traditional Chinese society and collaborating with Western powers. Across Shanxi, Zhili, and neighboring areas, Catholic communities faced sudden and extreme violence. Churches were destroyed and believers were confronted with demands to recant. Those who refused, including women and entire families, were killed. Mary Zheng Xu is recorded among the Chinese Catholics who died for their faith in the course of this persecution.

Surviving historical documentation for many of the individual Chinese lay martyrs of this period is limited. Contemporary accounts by missionaries and later processes of beatification and canonization preserved lists of names and the essential fact that these persons had been put to death rather than deny their Christian belief. Personal details such as exact dates of birth, places of origin, family circumstances, and the precise manner of each death were not always recorded or have not always survived in accessible sources. Mary Zheng Xu belongs to this large group of ordinary faithful whose witness is known principally through the Church’s official recognition of their martyrdom.

Pope John Paul II canonized one hundred twenty martyrs of China on 1 October 2000. The group comprised eighty-seven Chinese Catholics—laypeople, priests, and religious—and thirty-three foreign missionaries, spanning deaths from the mid-seventeenth century to the early twentieth century. A substantial number of the Chinese members of this group perished during the Boxer uprising. Their shared liturgical commemoration is kept on 9 July. The canonization drew attention to the history of the Catholic Church in China and to the role of native believers alongside missionaries. Mary Zheng Xu is honored as part of this company of saints.
