Biography

Short Description

Maternus of Cologne is the first historically attested bishop of Cologne (Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium) in the Roman province of Germania Inferior. He lived in the early fourth century, when Christian communities along the Rhine first appear in surviving conciliar records after the Edict of Milan. Contemporary evidence for his career is limited but secure. He took part in the synod held at Rome in 313 under Pope Miltiades to examine the Donatist controversy, and he attended the Council of Arles in 314, which continued that work and issued canons for the Western church. In the documentation of those assemblies he is named as bishop of Cologne, and that attestation is the foundation of his historical biography. No reliable source records his parentage, place of birth, or early life, and no contemporary obituary preserves the date or place of his death.

A much fuller story grew up in the medieval Rhineland, above all at Trier. According to the legend preserved in the Gesta Treverorum and related texts, Saint Peter dispatched three missionaries—Eucharius, Valerius, and Maternus—from Rome to preach in Gaul. Maternus died at Elegia, a place identified with Illzach in Alsace. His companions went back to Peter, who gave them his pastoral staff; by its power they restored Maternus to life. The three men then founded the church of Trier, Eucharius serving as first bishop, Valerius as second, and Maternus as third. Later versions also made Maternus bishop of Tongeren and of Cologne. The same cycle accounts for the relic known as the Staff of Saint Peter (Petrusstab), long shown at Cologne. Modern historians regard this narrative as a foundation legend intended to confer apostolic, Petrine antiquity on the Rhenish sees. It cannot be reconciled with the fourth-century date of the bishop who sat at Rome and Arles, and it appears to merge or invent several persons. A clearly historical bishop of Trier, Agricius (also called Agritius), was Maternus’s contemporary and was likewise present at Arles in 314.

The historical Maternus therefore belongs to the Constantinian church, not to the apostolic age. His participation in the Roman synod of 313 and the Council of Arles in 314 situates him among the bishops who implemented the new legal status of Christianity in the western provinces. Cologne was a major colonial city and a center of the Rhine army; the existence of an organized Christian community there by the early fourth century accords with both the conciliar evidence and the later prominence of the Cologne church. Medieval episcopal catalogues of Cologne assigned him a lengthy tenure ending in 328, and that year became traditional in martyrologies and modern reference works. The figure is not confirmed by any fourth-century document, which last mention him in 314. Early sources are likewise silent on whether he died and was buried at Cologne.

Devotion to Maternus as a saint is of long standing in the Rhineland and in Alsace. His chief feast is observed on 14 September. Cologne, Trier, and Tongeren all claimed him, and the Alsatian episode at Elegia kept his name alive there. Relics associated with him and the Petrusstab maintained the cult through the Middle Ages. He is remembered as an apostle of the lower Rhine and as the proto-bishop of Cologne, even though the Petrine mission story is legendary. No papal canonization of the later medieval or Tridentine type is recorded; his cult arose by local episcopal and popular recognition, in the manner later described as pre-congregation. There is no documentation of a wife, children, or membership in a religious order, categories that in any case fit poorly with what little is known of a fourth-century civic bishop.
