Biography

Short Description

Matilda (Mathilde) was an Ottonian princess and the first abbess of the Imperial Abbey of Quedlinburg. She was born in 955, the daughter of King Otto I of Germany, later Holy Roman Emperor, and his second wife, Adelaide of Italy. Through her father she was a granddaughter of King Henry the Fowler and of Saint Matilda of Ringelheim, who had joined Otto in founding Quedlinburg in 936 as a memorial for Henry and as a dynastic religious center. Through her mother she was linked to the Burgundian royal house and to the former kings of Italy. She had a full brother, the future Emperor Otto II, and half-siblings from Otto I’s first marriage to Edith of England, among them Liudolf of Swabia and William, Archbishop of Mainz. From childhood she was intended for the religious life and for leadership of the family foundation at Quedlinburg rather than for a dynastic marriage.

In 966, when she was about eleven years old, a royal assembly at Quedlinburg elected her abbess of the community, and she was consecrated by her half-brother Archbishop William of Mainz. The house was a Stift of secular canonesses, recruiting unmarried daughters of the high nobility; its abbess ranked as a princess of the Empire and exercised temporal authority over the abbey’s lands and dependents. Under Matilda the foundation received grants and immunities from Otto I and later from Otto II that confirmed it as an immediate imperial abbey. She presided over a community that combined liturgical observance and the education of noblewomen with the commemoration of the Ottonian dead, whose tombs lay in the abbey church of Saint Servatius. Her grandmother Saint Matilda died in 968 and was buried there during the young abbess’s tenure.

Matilda’s office made her a political figure in tenth-century Saxony and in the wider empire. While Otto II campaigned in Italy she remained in Germany and helped represent the dynasty in its Saxon heartland. After Otto II died in 983, leaving the child Otto III as heir, Duke Henry II of Bavaria (Henry the Quarrelsome) tried to seize the kingship. Matilda sided with her sister-in-law Empress Theophanu and with Empress Adelaide in defense of Otto III. Contemporary accounts place her among the magnates who gathered at Saxon assemblies and helped isolate Henry until he submitted in 985. In the following years she continued to appear at royal courts and to act as a stabilizing presence in eastern Saxony, hosting and participating in princely meetings at Quedlinburg, which remained a favored Ottonian residence and ceremonial site.

When Otto III campaigned in Italy in the late 990s he entrusted his aunt with substantial authority in Saxony. Matilda convened princes and exercised a form of representation or regency on the emperor’s behalf, a mark of the confidence the court placed in her judgment and in the prestige of her abbey. She died in early 999 at Quedlinburg, still in office, and was buried in the collegiate church. She was succeeded as abbess by her niece Adelheid, a daughter of Otto II and Theophanu. Matilda was not formally canonized. Her long rule nevertheless established Quedlinburg as one of the foremost female religious houses of the Ottonian age, and the abbey’s later historical writing, including the Annals of Quedlinburg, preserved the memory of her family and of her own tenure. She left no descendants; her life was that of a consecrated imperial abbess rather than of a married dynast.
