Biography

Short Description

Matilda of Ringelheim, venerated as Saint Matilda, was a Saxon noblewoman who became duchess of Saxony and queen of East Francia through her marriage to Henry I, known as Henry the Fowler, the first king of the Ottonian dynasty. She was born in the late ninth century at Engern in Westphalia, within the Duchy of Saxony. Her father was Count Dietrich of Ringelheim, a Westphalian count, and her mother was Reinhild, whom the medieval lives describe as being of Danish and Frisian royal descent. Matilda spent her youth at the convent of Herford in Westphalia, where her grandmother, also named Matilda, was abbess. There she received a Christian education and acquired the habits of prayer and charity that later writers presented as the foundation of her public life.

About 909 she was married to Henry, then duke of Saxony. The union linked leading Saxon families and, after Henry's election as king of East Francia in 919, made Matilda queen. Henry had previously been married to Hatheburg of Merseburg, so Matilda was his second wife. The couple had several children who became central figures in tenth-century politics: Otto, who succeeded his father as king in 936 and was crowned emperor at Rome in 962; Henry, who became duke of Bavaria; Bruno, who became archbishop of Cologne and duke of Lotharingia; Gerberga, who married King Louis IV of West Francia; and Hedwig, who married Hugh the Great and was the mother of Hugh Capet, founder of the Capetian royal line. As queen, Matilda was remembered for distributing alms, ransoming captives, and endowing churches and monasteries, activities that later hagiographers treated as the proper works of a Christian ruler's wife.

Henry died in 936 at Memleben. In his memory Matilda founded Quedlinburg Abbey, a community of canonesses that also served as a memorial church and burial place for the Ottonian house. She likewise founded or substantially endowed religious houses at Nordhausen, Enger, and Pöhlde, among other places. In the years after 936 she favored her younger son Henry in the royal succession, which produced a serious rift with Otto. She was accused of dissipating the resources of the crown through indiscriminate charity and was for a time deprived of her dower lands. The quarrel was later composed, and Matilda recovered an honored position as queen mother, though the episode left a mark on the way later writers explained her sanctity and her political difficulties.

In her later years Matilda resided chiefly at the communities she had established, above all at Quedlinburg, occupying herself with prayer, the relief of the poor, and the direction of her foundations. Two Latin biographies, the earlier Life of Queen Matilda composed at Quedlinburg in the 970s and a later Life written in the early eleventh century, portray her as a model of royal widowhood, humility, and generosity. These texts are hagiographical and dynastic in purpose and must be used with caution, but they remain the principal narrative sources for her life. Matilda died at Quedlinburg on 14 March 968 and was buried in the abbey church beside Henry. Devotion to her as a saint arose soon afterward in Ottonian circles and was eventually received more widely in the Latin Church. Her feast is observed on 14 March. She is traditionally invoked as a patron of widows, of parents of large families, of those who have been falsely accused, and of queens. No act of formal papal canonization in the later medieval sense is recorded; her cult belongs to the earlier pattern of local and familial veneration.
