Biography

Short Description

Matthew Carreri, also known as Matteo Carrieri and sometimes called Matthew of Mantua, was a fifteenth-century Italian friar of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). He was born in Mantua, in the Po valley of northern Italy, around 1420. In his youth he entered the Dominican convent of his native city and took up the life of a mendicant preacher. The Dominican Order in that century was marked by internal reform movements that stressed stricter observance of the rule, theological study, and popular preaching; Carreri is generally associated with this observant current rather than with high office in the order or the wider Church.

As a religious he became known throughout Lombardy and neighboring regions as an itinerant preacher of missions. The principal sources for his life are later hagiographical accounts, which portray him as a man of severe austerity, given to fasting, corporal penance, and prolonged prayer, with a special devotion to the Passion of Christ. He was reputed among contemporaries to possess gifts of prophecy and of miracles, including healings, and was consulted as a spiritual director. His work kept him moving from town to town in the Po valley rather than attaching him permanently to a single convent as a lector or prior; details of his official assignments remain scarce. He should not be confused with more famous Dominican figures of the same era such as Saint Antoninus of Florence.

In 1470, while engaged in a preaching mission at Vigevano, then in the Duchy of Milan, he fell ill and died on 5 October. He was buried in the Dominican church of that town. Popular veneration arose soon after his death, both among the local faithful and within the Order of Preachers. He is honored in the Catholic Church as Blessed Matthew Carreri. His liturgical memorial is kept on 7 October in the calendar of the Dominican Order. He was not canonized as a saint according to the later formal process; his status is that of a blessed whose cult was recognized. Precise particulars of any papal confirmation of his cult are not uniformly reported in the accessible historical literature.

The documentary basis for Carreri’s biography remains limited. No substantial corpus of his sermons or letters is widely known, and later lives follow the conventional patterns of late-medieval mendicant hagiography. What can be affirmed with reasonable confidence is that he was a Mantuan Dominican of the mid-fifteenth century, an itinerant preacher in Lombardy, a figure of reputed austerity and miracles, and a man whose memory of holiness was preserved at Mantua, Vigevano, and in Dominican houses of northern Italy after his death in 1470.
