Biography

Short Description

Matthew Nguyễn Văn Ðắc is recorded in some cataloguing systems, including under Wikidata identifier Q11771439, as a named historical figure. The combination of the Christian baptismal name Matthew (Matthêu in Vietnamese usage) with the family and personal name Nguyễn Văn Ðắc follows a pattern long typical of Vietnamese Catholics. That community took shape from the seventeenth century through the work of Jesuit missionaries and later the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and it endured repeated waves of persecution under Nguyễn-dynasty edicts and in later political regimes.

He does not appear in the standard published lists of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1988, nor is he readily identifiable in widely available directories of the Vietnamese episcopate or in major Western hagiographical encyclopedias. No reliable secondary source consulted for this notice supplies a verified year of birth, place of origin, ecclesiastical rank, religious order, or date and circumstances of death.

Because those core facts remain unconfirmed, it is not possible to state whether he was a diocesan priest, a member of a religious congregation, a layman, or a victim of persecution, nor to assign a feast day, patronage, or any act of beatification or canonization. Local parish registers, diocesan archives in Vietnam, or unpublished necrologies might contain further information, but they have not been available for independent verification here.

The present account therefore confines itself to the onomastic evidence of Vietnamese Catholic identity and to the acknowledgment that a fuller, source-based biography cannot yet be written from materials accessible in standard historical and hagiographical literature.
