Biography

Short Description

Maurice of Carnoët (French: Maurice de Carnoët) was a twelfth-century Breton Cistercian monk and abbot whose life is bound up with the expansion of the White Monks in western Brittany. Tradition, followed by standard hagiographical and encyclopedic notices, places his birth in 1117 at Carnoët in Cornouaille, in the district that later became the commune of Clohars-Carnoët in Finistère. Almost nothing independently documented survives about his family or his years before he entered religion. Later notices present him as a native of the same coastal woodland region in which he would spend his last years as abbot, rather than as an outsider brought in to govern a Breton house.

He took the Cistercian habit at Notre-Dame de Langonnet, a monastery founded in the 1130s in inland Brittany and belonging to the filiation of Cîteaux. There he was formed in the observances of the order and in time was chosen abbot of Langonnet. The Cistercian network was then spreading quickly through the duchy, with ducal and aristocratic patronage supporting new foundations in forests and sparsely settled districts. In 1177 a daughter house of Langonnet was planted in the forest of Carnoët, near the southern coast of Cornouaille and the town of Quimperlé. Monks from Langonnet colonized the site, and Maurice became the first abbot of the new community, originally dedicated to Our Lady and later known as the Abbey of Saint-Maurice de Carnoët. The location answered the Cistercian preference for isolation while still allowing the house to develop the mills, granges, and rural rights typical of the order’s economy in Brittany.

As abbot he was remembered for personal austerity, care for the poor, and a reputation for miracles already during his lifetime, though the surviving wonder-stories are late and conventional in form. He died at the abbey on 5 October 1191 and was buried in the monastic church. His tomb attracted local devotion; the community and the surrounding countryside regarded him as a saint, and the house itself came to bear his name. The cult remained essentially regional, centered on the abbey and on Breton calendars rather than on a wide European observance. He is commemorated on 13 October. No papal bull of canonization from the later medieval Roman process is securely attached to his name: like many twelfth-century monastic founders, he belongs to the class of saints whose veneration grew from local episcopal and popular recognition.

The abbey declined in the later Middle Ages, suffered in subsequent wars and in the French Revolution, and today only fragmentary remains mark the site at Clohars-Carnoët. Maurice of Carnoët is nonetheless retained in lists of Cistercian and Breton saints as the founding abbot of Carnoët and as a representative figure of twelfth-century Cistercian expansion in Brittany. Beyond that regional and monastic memory, no well-documented list of patronages of places, causes, or professions is attached to him in the standard sources.
