Biography

Short Description

Maurilius of Angers, known in French as Maurille, was a bishop of the civitas of the Andecavi (Angers) in fifth-century Gaul and is venerated as a saint in the Latin Church. The chief narrative of his life is the Vita sancti Maurilii, composed in the early seventh century by Magnobodus (also called Magnobod), himself a bishop of Angers. According to that account, Maurilius was born in Milan of a family of high social standing and received a careful education in letters and rhetoric. Attracted by the fame of Martin of Tours, whose monastic and episcopal model was already influential across Gaul, he left Italy, entered Martin’s circle at Tours, and received ordination as deacon and later as priest from Martin’s hands. Independent fifth-century evidence for these details is lacking; the Vita was written some six generations after the events it describes. A Milanese origin and a link with Martin remain plausible in the context of late antique clerical careers, but they cannot be confirmed from contemporary documents. No reliable source records a precise year of birth.

Hagiography presents Maurilius as combining priestly ministry with a desire for solitude. He is said to have lived as a hermit in the Angevin region. A central legend, widely repeated in medieval and later retellings, concerns a child who died without baptism, or for whose death Maurilius felt responsible. In remorse he abandoned his post, reached the sea, and crossed to Britain, where he spent several years in eremitical life. When the see of Angers needed a bishop, messengers sought him out. Stories of a ring or keys recovered from the water by a fish, and of the subsequent raising of the dead child—named Renatus (René) in the tradition—belong to this legendary cycle and follow well-known hagiographical motifs. The child Renatus later received a local cult at Angers. These tales illustrate how Maurilius was remembered; they are not datable historical incidents.

Tradition holds that Maurilius occupied the bishopric of Angers for about thirty years and that he died on 13 September, a date that became his feast. The year 453 is the date commonly assigned in martyrologies, episcopal catalogues, and modern reference works, though it rests on later compilation rather than on a contemporary obituary. As bishop he is credited with strengthening Christian life in the diocese, building churches, and embodying the monk-bishop ideal associated with Martin of Tours. He was buried at Angers in a church that he is said to have founded, which in later centuries bore his name (Saint-Maurille) and housed his tomb. The church and the cult of his relics were important in medieval Angers; the relics were translated at various times. He appears in the Roman Martyrology on 13 September. He is distinct from Maurilius of Rouen, an eleventh-century archbishop of Rouen who is a different person.

Maurilius was venerated as a saint from the early Middle Ages without a formal process of canonization of the later papal type; his cult is therefore of the ancient, pre-congregational kind. He is associated with the city and diocese of Angers as a local patron. The historical figure remains obscure outside the seventh-century Vita and the liturgical and episcopal tradition of Angers: no writings of his own survive, and fifth-century Gallic sources do not mention him by name. Modern historians treat Magnobodus’s Life as a source for seventh-century Angevin memory and for the ideals of episcopal holiness, rather than as a chronicle of fifth-century events. Nonetheless, the existence of a Bishop Maurilius of Angers in the mid-fifth century is generally accepted, and his feast on 13 September has been observed for many centuries in the local calendar and in wider martyrological tradition.
