Biography

Short Description

Maurus of Cesena, known in Italian as Mauro di Cesena, was a Benedictine monk and bishop of the tenth century. He was born in Rome to a noble family; later hagiographical tradition describes him as a kinsman of Otto, the Saxon ruler who became Holy Roman Emperor as Otto I. The precise year of his birth is not recorded in surviving sources, and the nature of any imperial kinship is not documented in contemporary records. Drawn to the monastic life, he entered the Benedictine community at the abbey of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, near Ravenna, a house attached to one of the great late-antique basilicas of the Ravennate coast. There he lived under the Rule of Saint Benedict and in time was chosen abbot of the monastery.

From the abbacy he was called to the episcopal see of Cesena in Emilia-Romagna. Traditional lists of the bishops of Cesena place his appointment in the mid-920s, often given as 926, though archival evidence for the diocese in this period is limited. As bishop he combined the public duties of a tenth-century Italian prelate—oversight of the clergy, care of the poor, and the defense of church rights amid the political instability of the kingdom of Italy—with marked personal austerity. He is remembered for seeking a contemplative life even while remaining in office, a pattern found among some early medieval bishop-saints who tried to hold together governance and monastic ascesis.

To that end Maurus established a hermitage on a hill near Cesena, commonly identified as Monte Spaziano, from which he could look down on the city. He withdrew there for prayer and solitude, returning as needed to exercise his episcopal ministry. This image of the bishop-hermit became the core of his later cult. According to the date preserved in the Roman Martyrology and in Cesena’s liturgical tradition, he died on 21 November 946, said to have died at or near his hermitage. His relics came to be kept in the cathedral of Cesena.

Veneration of Maurus as a saint grew locally in Cesena and was accepted in the wider Latin Church; his feast is kept on 21 November. Churches, a hill, and local memory in the city preserve his name. Because he belongs to the era before the centralized papal canonization process of the later Middle Ages, no individual pope is recorded as having formally canonized him; his status rests on long-standing cult and martyrological entry. Precise biographical details beyond the outline of monk, abbot, bishop, and hermit remain scarce, and later lives tend to embroider the tenth-century facts with conventional hagiographical themes.
