Biography

Short Description

Maurus Xaverius Herbst was an eighteenth-century German Benedictine monk and abbot of Plankstetten Abbey. He was born Johann Georg Herbst on 14 September 1701 in Naila, a town in Upper Franconia then situated in the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Bayreuth within the Holy Roman Empire. Little is recorded in widely available sources about his parents or early schooling. In 1720 he entered the Benedictine monastery of Plankstetten in the Upper Palatinate. Upon receiving the habit he took the religious name Maurus Xaverius, invoking Saint Maurus, a disciple of Saint Benedict, together with Saint Francis Xavier. He made monastic profession in 1721 and was ordained priest in 1725.

Plankstetten Abbey, a twelfth-century foundation, had been restored to Benedictine life after the disruptions of the Reformation and the Thirty Years' War. In the early eighteenth century it shared in the Catholic Baroque revival characteristic of Bavaria and neighboring Franconian territories and belonged to the milieu of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation. After ordination Herbst lived the ordinary round of choir, cloister, and house offices. In 1742 the monastic chapter elected him abbot. He governed the community until his death, holding both the spiritual care of the monks and the temporal administration of the abbey's estates and legal standing.

As abbot, Herbst is associated with the Baroque refurbishment of the abbey church and conventual buildings, a typical expression of post-war Catholic confidence in southern Germany. Such campaigns usually involved stucco, fresco, and new liturgical furnishings intended to honor the liturgy and display the dignity of the house. An imperial-era abbot was also responsible for agricultural revenues, the education and discipline of the monks, and relations with neighboring secular and ecclesiastical authorities. Surviving evidence of Herbst's personal administration is limited in standard reference works, and he is not known to have left a substantial published theological or historical corpus. His reputation remained that of a local monastic superior rather than a writer or public controversialist.

Herbst died at Plankstetten on 31 January 1757. He was neither beatified nor canonized, and the Catholic Church has not assigned him a feast day or official patronage. His historical interest lies in his place among the Baroque abbots of Bavarian Benedictinism. Plankstetten itself was later affected by the secularization of Bavarian monasteries in the early nineteenth century and was subsequently revived; the Baroque character of its church still reflects the period in which he served as abbot.
