Biography

Short Description

Mavriky Mikhailovich Poletaev was a Russian Orthodox archpriest and hieromartyr of the Soviet period, numbered among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. He was born on 18 January 1880 in the village of Nikolskoye in Morshansk uyezd of Tambov Governorate, then part of the Russian Empire, into the family of a parish priest. Like many sons of the clerical estate in late imperial Russia, he was directed toward church service from childhood and received his formal training at the Tambov Theological Seminary. After completing seminary he was ordained to the priesthood in the married (white) clergy and in time was raised to the dignity of protoierei, or archpriest, a rank given to senior parish priests of proven service.

His ministry unfolded across a generation of catastrophe for the Russian Church. The revolutions of 1917, the civil war, the confiscation of church valuables in the early 1920s, the League of Militant Atheists, and the closing of churches all fell within the years of his priesthood. Clergy were classified as disenfranchised persons, taxed punitively, and repeatedly arrested. The surviving record of Archpriest Mavriky’s life is thin, as is common for parish priests of his generation whose papers were seized or destroyed; hagiographical notices compiled after the fall of the Soviet Union rely chiefly on NKVD investigative files and on local church memory rather than on a full contemporary vita. They portray him as a priest who continued to serve the sacraments under these conditions until the climax of the terror.

In 1937, during the so-called mass operations of the NKVD, he was arrested. An extrajudicial three-member troika sentenced him to death, and he was shot on 4 September 1937. He was fifty-seven years old. The Soviet authorities did not disclose the place of execution to relatives, and his body was almost certainly buried in an unmarked mass grave, the usual practice for those condemned in the secret operations of that year. No reliable account of a public trial or of last words has been preserved.

At the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000 he was glorified as a hieromartyr together with a large host of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia whose names had been recovered from archives and diocesan commissions. His individual feast is kept on 4 September (22 August in the Julian calendar still used liturgically by the Russian Church), and he is also commemorated on the Sunday of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. No medieval-style patronages of places, trades, or illnesses have been assigned to him. Beyond the fact that he belonged to the married parish clergy, the names of his wife and of any children are not established in the standard synaxaria, and many particulars of his inner life and parish work remain unknown.
