Biography

Short Description

Maxim Sandovich was born in 1886 in the village of Zdynia in the Lemko region of Galicia, then a crown land of Austria-Hungary and now in southeastern Poland. He came from a peasant family of Lemkos, an East Slavic highland people who at that time belonged overwhelmingly to the Greek Catholic Church. In his youth he was drawn to Eastern Orthodoxy, which Habsburg officials associated with Russian political influence and therefore treated with suspicion. He left Galicia to pursue a religious vocation in the Russian Empire, spending time as a novice at the Pochaev Lavra in Volhynia and then studying at the Orthodox theological seminary in Zhytomyr. He was ordained to the priesthood as a married cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church, following the path of the parish (white) clergy rather than remaining in monastic life.

After ordination he returned to his native Lemko country to serve small communities that had converted from Greek Catholicism to Orthodoxy. He was assigned to the village of Grab, where he conducted pastoral work among peasants who had embraced Orthodoxy. Austrian authorities regarded such missionary activity as a threat to the integrity of the Habsburg state, especially in light of the broader Russophile movement among Galician Ruthenians. In 1912 Sandovich was arrested and imprisoned in Lviv on charges related to alleged political agitation and espionage on behalf of Russia. He remained in custody for roughly two years. In 1914 he was tried and acquitted for lack of evidence that his work had been political rather than religious, and he was released in the early summer of that year.

The outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 immediately revived Austrian fears of a Russophile fifth column in Galicia. Sandovich was arrested again within days of the war's beginning and taken to Gorlice. On 6 August 1914 he was executed by firing squad in the courtyard of the Gorlice prison without a formal trial. Later Orthodox accounts record that he blessed those present with the sign of the cross and uttered words of fidelity to the Orthodox faith and to Rus before he was shot. His wife, Pelagia, is reported to have witnessed the execution. In the months that followed, many Lemkos and Galician Russophiles, including members of his family, were interned in the Talerhof camp in Styria, where large numbers died of disease and hardship. A son, also named Maxim, was born after the priest's death and later became an Orthodox clergyman.

Sandovich came to be venerated among Orthodox Lemkos and Carpatho-Rusyns as a hieromartyr and as a symbol of resistance to forced religious assimilation. After the war, Orthodox parish life continued in parts of the Lemko region despite further political upheavals. In 1994 the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint; he is also commemorated by other Orthodox churches, including the Russian Orthodox Church, and is often styled Saint Maxim of Gorlice. His feast is observed on 6 August, the date of his death. He remains a central figure in the religious memory of the Lemko people and of Carpatho-Russian Orthodox communities in Europe and North America.
