Biography

Short Description

Saint Maximin, also known as Maximinus of Trier, was a fourth-century bishop of Trier (Augusta Treverorum) and one of the principal Western defenders of Nicene orthodoxy during the Arian controversies. Surviving sources do not record the year of his birth. Later tradition places his origin at Silly, near Poitiers in Aquitaine, in what is now France. He succeeded Saint Agricius as bishop of Trier, most likely in the early 330s. Because Trier was then an imperial residence in the western empire, its bishop occupied a see of unusual political and ecclesiastical weight.

Maximin’s historical importance rests above all on his resistance to Arianism and on the protection he gave to exiled Nicene bishops. Saint Athanasius of Alexandria spent part of his first exile at Trier, from about 335 or 336 until 337, and afterwards spoke of Maximin with gratitude and respect. Other displaced prelates, among them Paul of Constantinople, likewise found refuge at Trier. Maximin cooperated with leading Western figures such as Pope Julius I and Hosius of Cordoba. He was associated with the Council of Sardica in 343, which restored Athanasius and condemned prominent Arian bishops. Through these actions he helped keep the Gallic and Rhineland churches aligned with the Nicene faith at a time when imperial policy in the East often favored Arian or homoian positions.

Contemporary evidence for his later years is sparse. A synod said to have met at Cologne in 346 lists a bishop Maximinus of Trier among those who condemned the local bishop Euphratas, though the authenticity of those acts has been debated by modern scholars. Traditional accounts state that he died on 12 September in the mid-340s (authorities commonly give 346 or 349) and that he died at Poitiers while visiting his native region, after which his body was brought back to Trier. He was buried in a cemetery on the northern side of the city. Over his tomb there later rose the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Maximin, which became one of the great monastic houses of the early medieval Rhineland and helped spread his cult.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 29 May. Medieval Trier honored him as a miracle-worker and as a guardian of the city’s Christian tradition, and his name remained attached to the abbey until its suppression in the modern period. No religious order in the later canonical sense can be ascribed to him; he belonged to the secular episcopate of the fourth-century church. There is no reliable evidence concerning a spouse or children. He was neither pope nor patriarch. Formal papal canonization did not exist in his era; his sainthood rests on ancient local cult and eventual entry into the martyrologies.

Because so much of the personal detail in the later lives of Maximin derives from medieval legend rather than from fourth-century documents, a cautious account must distinguish what is well attested from what is only traditional. His episcopate at Trier, his hospitality to Athanasius, and his anti-Arian stance are secure. The exact year of his birth, the precise year of his death, and many miracle stories attached to his name are not. Even so, he remains a documented and significant figure in the Western church of the mid-fourth century.
