Biography

Short Description

Maximus of Aveia, known in Italian as San Massimo d'Aveia, was a Christian deacon and martyr of the third century associated with the ancient city of Aveia in the land of the Vestini, in what is now the Abruzzo region of central Italy. Aveia was a Roman municipium whose remains lie near the modern commune of Fossa, in the province of L'Aquila. Contemporary written evidence for his life is lacking; what is known derives from the Roman Martyrology, from local liturgical tradition, and from a later Latin passio of conventional hagiographical type. That tradition presents him as a native of Aveia who served the Christian community there as a deacon. No reliable source records his parentage, education, or the date of his birth, and any attempt to assign a birth year would be conjectural.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 10 June with the notice that he suffered martyrdom at Aveia in the Vestine country during the persecution of the emperor Decius. Decius reigned from 249 to 251 and in 250 issued an empire-wide edict requiring inhabitants to sacrifice to the Roman gods and to obtain a libellus certifying compliance. Christians who refused were subject to imprisonment, torture, and death. According to the Passio Sancti Maximi, a medieval narrative not regarded by historians as an eyewitness document, the deacon Maximus was arrested for refusing to sacrifice, interrogated by a provincial official, subjected to various torments, and finally killed. Some versions of the legend place part of the proceedings at nearby Amiternum and describe the execution as precipitation from a cliff; these details belong to the stock motifs of martyr acts and cannot be confirmed. The year of death is traditionally given as 250, in keeping with the date of Decius's edict, rather than as a day documented in official records.

After the martyrdom, Maximus was buried at Aveia, which remained a focus of his cult. The episcopal see connected with the Vestini later had its seat at Forcona (Forconium), near present-day Civita di Bagno. Local histories report that in the tenth century Bishop Ramperto (or Ramberto) of Forcona translated and honourably enshrined the relics. In the mid-thirteenth century the Hohenstaufen king Conrad IV promoted the foundation of a new city, L'Aquila, by concentrating the population of numerous surrounding castles. In connection with that foundation, around 1256-1257, the relics of Saint Maximus, together with those of Saint George, were transferred to the cathedral of the new commune. The Cathedral of Saints Maximus and George (Cattedrale dei Santi Massimo e Giorgio) in L'Aquila has ever since been the principal shrine of the martyr and the place where his relics are preserved. The translation tied the civic identity of L'Aquila to the ancient saint of Aveia.

Maximus is the principal patron saint of the city of L'Aquila and of the Archdiocese of L'Aquila, and he is also venerated at Fossa, the settlement that occupies the territory of ancient Aveia. His feast day is 10 June. He belonged to the secular clergy of the third-century church and is not associated with any later religious order. No authentic evidence survives concerning marriage or children. He was neither Bishop of Rome nor a patriarch of any Eastern see. Like other pre-Constantinian martyrs, he was recognized as a saint through popular cult and inclusion in the martyrologies, not through a formal process of canonization by a medieval or modern pope. Historical knowledge of Maximus remains modest: the liturgical books of the Catholic Church affirm that a deacon of that name was martyred at Aveia in the third century and has been continuously venerated in the region, while the colourful episodes of the passio must be treated as legend.
