Biography

Short Description

Maximus of Turin (Latin: Maximus Taurinensis) was a bishop of Turin in northern Italy in the late fourth and early fifth centuries and one of the more important Latin preachers of late antiquity. Almost nothing about his family, birthplace, or formation can be verified. No contemporary Life survives. The principal ancient notice is the short entry in Gennadius of Marseille’s De viris illustribus, compiled near the end of the fifth century, which identifies Maximus as bishop of Turin, praises his zeal in preaching, ascribes to him homilies and writings on the saints, and states that he died in the reign of Honorius and the younger Theodosius, that is, between 408 and 423. Modern scholarship generally applies that chronological frame to the author of the large surviving sermon collection, while distinguishing him from a later bishop of the same name who subscribed synodal acts at Milan in 451 and at Rome in 465. Older narratives that made a single Maximus bishop from the late fourth century until the 460s rest on that conflation and are no longer followed for the homilist.

As bishop he served a church exposed to the military and social crises of the early fifth century in Cisalpine Gaul. The authentic sermons refer to fear of barbarian invasion, the burning of towns and churches, displacement of people, and the duty of repentance and steadfastness. Northern Italy in these decades saw Gothic campaigns associated with Alaric and the invasion of Radagaisus; Turin lay on routes of military movement. Maximus’s preaching also treats the persistence of pagan custom, New Year and other civic rites, soothsaying, and the moral life of an urban and rural flock. He promotes the cult of local martyrs, including the Turin martyrs Adventor, Octavius, and Solutor, and instructs the community through the liturgical year. He appears as a pastor of exhortation and discipline rather than as a participant in the great Eastern doctrinal controversies, though he opposes Arian and other heterodox teaching when it touches his people. Claims that he was a disciple of Ambrose of Milan, a native of Rhaetia, or a member of a particular monastic community are not securely documented.

A substantial Latin homiletic corpus is transmitted under his name. Critical work, especially the edition of Almut Mutzenbecher in Corpus Christianorum Series Latina, has sought to separate authentic sermons from later attributions. The genuine collection, on the order of one hundred pieces, is among the more important Latin preaching corpora after Ambrose and Augustine. The sermons are comparatively short, often tied to a feast or a scriptural lection, and notable for a direct pastoral tone. They are a primary source for liturgy, popular religion, and social conditions in northern Italy at the turn of the fifth century. Treatises on the saints mentioned by Gennadius are lost or of uncertain authenticity; works sometimes printed under Maximus’s name in early modern editions include material that later criticism has reassigned or judged spurious.

Later tradition venerated him as a saint. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Maximus, bishop of Turin, on 25 June. No reliable account of his burial place survives, and there is no documented papal process of canonization or beatification in the later juridical sense; his cult belongs to the era of episcopal and popular recognition. His historical importance rests less on a recoverable biography than on the sermons, which show a Western bishop teaching, consoling, and disciplining his church amid the collapse of security in northern Italy and which remain a principal witness to Latin preaching and local Christianity in that region.
