Biography

Short Description

Megingoz of Würzburg, also known in Latin as Megingaudus or Megingozus and in German as Megingaud, was an eighth-century Frankish churchman, Benedictine monk, and the second bishop of the diocese of Würzburg. He came from the Frankish nobility, though the names of his parents and the precise place and year of his birth are not recorded in surviving sources. His formation took place in the missionary and monastic milieu created in central Germany by Saint Boniface and Boniface’s disciples. Megingoz is counted among those who continued Boniface’s work of organizing dioceses, introducing the Benedictine rule, and binding the churches of Franconia more closely to the Frankish rulers and to Rome. He was a close associate of Saint Burchard, an Anglo-Saxon disciple of Boniface who became the first bishop of Würzburg in the early 740s.

When Burchard resigned the see in 753, Megingoz succeeded him as bishop of Würzburg. His episcopate lasted until 769 and thus spanned the last years of Pepin the Short and the beginning of Charlemagne’s rule. As bishop he administered a still-young diocese whose territory covered much of Franconia. He is attested in contemporary diplomatic material and is associated with the endowment of churches and monasteries in the region of the River Main. In keeping with the Bonifatian reform, he promoted Benedictine monasticism and the regular life of the clergy. Later tradition credits him with a significant role in the foundation of the monastery of Neustadt am Main, established in the late 760s as a Benedictine house in the wooded country of the Spessart.

In 769 Megingoz laid down the bishopric. He retired to Neustadt am Main, where he lived as a monk for the remainder of his life. According to the Würzburg tradition and medieval necrologies, he died there on 26 February 783 and was buried at the abbey. His successor in the see of Würzburg was Bishop Berowelf. The relative scarcity of eighth-century narrative sources means that no contemporary vita of Megingoz survives; knowledge of his career rests on episcopal catalogues, charters, the memory of the Würzburg church, and later hagiographical notices, which must be used with caution where they go beyond the thin contemporary record.

Megingoz has been venerated as a saint, especially in the diocese of Würzburg and in Benedictine communities connected with Neustadt. His feast day is observed on 26 February. Because he died centuries before the development of the centralized papal processes of beatification and canonization, he belongs to the pre-congregation saints, recognized through ancient local cult rather than through a surviving papal decree. He lived under monastic vows and is not known to have married or to have had children. Many personal details remain unknown, including a verified year and place of birth.
