Biography

Short Description

Meinrad Eugster was a Swiss Benedictine lay brother of Einsiedeln Abbey, remembered for a local and monastic reputation of holiness rather than for high office, priesthood, or published writings. He was born in 1848 in Altstätten, in the Rhine Valley of the canton of St. Gallen in northeastern Switzerland. He belonged to the ordinary rural and artisanal world of nineteenth-century Catholic Switzerland and trained as a shoemaker, the trade he later exercised inside the monastery. Little of his childhood and family circumstances is recorded in widely available historical literature. What is certain is that he did not pursue an academic monastic career or holy orders, but the hidden life of a converse, or lay brother, in a great abbey.

In the later nineteenth century he entered the Benedictine abbey of Einsiedeln in the canton of Schwyz, one of the principal monastic houses of the Swiss Confederation and a major Marian pilgrimage shrine associated with Saint Meinrad, the ninth-century hermit whose name he took in religion. He bound himself to the Rule of Saint Benedict as a lay brother rather than as a choir monk or priest. In that period lay brothers typically carried the manual and domestic work of the community while choir monks maintained the full liturgical office. Eugster’s assigned labor was in the shoemaker’s workshop, where he served the practical needs of a large monastic household and pilgrimage abbey. He remained at Einsiedeln for the rest of his life.

His contemporaries and later notices emphasize humility, fidelity to work and prayer, and a quiet regularity of life rather than public miracles during his lifetime. In the Benedictine pattern of prayer and labor he combined the cobbler’s bench with the community’s round of worship. He was not an abbot, bishop, or ordained priest; his historical profile is that of a monastic craftsman whose sanctity, if accepted by the Church, would belong to the category of hidden holiness within a great abbey. He died at Einsiedeln in 1925 and was buried in connection with the abbey.

After his death a reputation for holiness attached to his memory at Einsiedeln, and a cause for beatification was in due course introduced. He has not, on verifiable public record used here, been enrolled among the blesseds or saints of the universal calendar, and he has no universally established feast day or list of patronages. The surviving portrait is therefore modest: a nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Swiss lay brother, a shoemaker of Einsiedeln, whose life is documented mainly through the abbey’s tradition and subsequent interest in his cause rather than through a large contemporary biographical record.
