Biography

Short Description

Saint Meinrad of Einsiedeln was a ninth-century Benedictine monk and hermit whose life and violent death became the spiritual origin of Einsiedeln Abbey in the territory of present-day Switzerland. Later medieval accounts place his birth around 797 in Swabia, within the East Frankish realm, into a noble family traditionally identified with the Counts of Hohenzollern; his birthplace is associated with the village of Sülchen near Rottenburg am Neckar. He was educated at the Abbey of Reichenau on Lake Constance, then one of the foremost monastic schools of the Carolingian world. There he entered the Benedictine order, made monastic profession, and was ordained a priest.

After years of community life at Reichenau and at a dependent cell at Bollingen on Lake Zurich, Meinrad withdrew to solitude. He first lived as a hermit on the slopes of the Etzel Pass and later moved deeper into the Finsterwald, the densely wooded district that would become the site of Einsiedeln. Tradition holds that he brought with him a statue of the Virgin Mary given by Abbess Hildegard of Zurich’s Fraumünster; that image later stood at the centre of Einsiedeln’s Marian pilgrimage. For more than two decades he combined austere eremitical prayer with a reputation for receiving every visitor who found his cell.

On 21 January 861 two robbers, knowing that pilgrims left gifts at the hermitage, came to him as if in need. Meinrad welcomed and fed them; they then murdered him. Hagiographical legend adds that two ravens which had lived with the hermit followed the killers as far as Zurich, where the crime was discovered and the men were executed. Meinrad’s body was taken to Reichenau for burial. The deserted hermitage quickly drew other solitaries, and in the tenth century a Benedictine monastery was founded on the spot. Meinrad’s relics were later translated to Einsiedeln Abbey, which regards him as its spiritual founder.

He is commemorated on 21 January and is popularly styled the Martyr of Hospitality. Einsiedeln grew into one of the principal Marian shrines north of the Alps, and Meinrad remains especially venerated in Switzerland and southern Germany as a model of monastic solitude, priestly charity, and Christian welcome of the stranger. His cult is ancient and local rather than the product of a later papal canonization process.
