Biography

Short Description

Melchior Grodziecki was born in 1584 in Cieszyn (then commonly called Teschen) in the Duchy of Teschen in Silesia, a Piast duchy that by the later sixteenth century lay under the Bohemian Crown and Habsburg sovereignty. He belonged to the Grodziecki family of Silesian nobility, a house of Polish speech and Catholic allegiance associated with the locality of Grodziec. In 1603 he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus at Brno in Moravia. After the novitiate he followed the ordinary Jesuit course of humanities, philosophy, and theology and was ordained a priest. Like many Central European Jesuits of his generation he was trained both for the classroom and for pastoral work in confessionally mixed territories.

He taught in Jesuit schools and was later assigned to the Society’s missions in the Kingdom of Hungary. In the years immediately before 1619 he was stationed in Košice (Hungarian: Kassa), a royal free city in Upper Hungary whose inhabitants included Catholics, Lutherans, and Calvinists. There he worked with the Hungarian Jesuit István Pongrácz. They were joined by Marko Krizin, a Croatian priest and canon of Esztergom who had been sent to Košice to serve the Catholic parish. The three men ministered to a Catholic minority in a town whose magistrates and much of the citizenry were Protestant, at a time when the Catholic recovery and Habsburg royal authority were closely identified with one another.

In 1619 Gábor Bethlen, Prince of Transylvania, invaded Habsburg Hungary in concert with Protestant estates at the opening of the Thirty Years’ War. His forces occupied Košice. Calvinist soldiery arrested Grodziecki, Pongrácz, and Krizin. The priests were imprisoned and pressed to abandon the Catholic Church and accept the Reformed faith. They refused. They were tortured over several days and put to death on 7 September 1619. Contemporary Catholic accounts state that they were beheaded after severe maltreatment and that their bodies were thrown into a drain or refuse pit. The remains were later recovered by Catholics in the city and became objects of veneration.

Devotion to the three as martyrs spread in Hungary, Poland, and the Habsburg lands. Pope Pius X beatified them on 15 January 1905. Pope John Paul II canonized them on 2 July 1995 in Košice, in a public act of major significance for the Church in Slovakia after the end of communist rule. They are known collectively as the Martyrs of Košice and are commemorated on 7 September. Melchior Grodziecki is honored as a Jesuit martyr and as a patron of the city and the Archdiocese of Košice, and he is remembered in Polish, Silesian, Slovak, and Hungarian Catholic tradition.
