Biography

Short Description

The holy martyr Melitina, whose name also appears in Latin and Greek sources as Melitene or Melitine, is remembered as a Christian woman put to death for her faith in the city of Marcianopolis in Thrace. Marcianopolis, founded by the emperor Trajan and named for his sister Ulpia Marciana, lay in the Roman province of Moesia Inferior, in the region of the modern Bulgarian city of Devnya. The liturgical and hagiographical tradition of the Christian East places her suffering in the reign of the emperor Antoninus Pius, who ruled from 138 to 161. No contemporary inscription, legal record, or extra-hagiographical witness preserves her name; what is known of her derives from later martyr acts, the Byzantine synaxaria, and the Roman Martyrology. Exact years of birth and death are not recorded, and any attempt to assign a specific calendar year would be conjecture.

According to the traditional passio, Melitina was a fervent Christian when the governor of the city, named Antiochus in the Greek texts, moved against the local Christian community. She was arrested for refusing to sacrifice to the pagan gods. The narrative describes a sequence of tortures typical of the genre: she was beaten, hung up, and torn, then thrown into prison. An angel is said to have appeared to her in the prison and healed her wounds. Brought a second time before the authorities and remaining constant, she was sentenced to death and beheaded. The Roman Martyrology, which commemorates her on 15 September, states that she was twice led to a temple of the idols and remained unharmed before her execution. Eastern Orthodox calendars generally keep her feast on 16 September. Historians note that the reign of Antoninus Pius was not marked by an empire-wide, systematic persecution comparable to those of Decius or Diocletian; the story as we have it reflects the pattern of a local magistrate acting against Christians, whether or not every narrative detail can be verified.

The same tradition reports that a pious Christian named Acacius, who was present at the execution, took the martyr’s body and buried it. Later notices add that Acacius himself afterwards suffered for Christ. Some later Greek accounts speak of a translation of Melitina’s relics to the island of Lemnos, but the date and circumstances of any such translation are not independently documented. She is not described in the sources as a member of a religious order, which in any case had not yet taken the later monastic form for women in the second-century Balkans. Liturgical texts commonly class her among the virgin-martyrs; there is no record of a husband or of children. Like other martyrs of the pre-Constantinian period, she was never the object of a formal process of canonization or beatification of the later papal type; her name entered the calendars through local cult and the gradual compilation of martyrologies and menologia.

Beyond this outline, little that is historically verifiable can be said. Melitina did not acquire a large popular cult with well-defined patronages of places, trades, or illnesses, and standard lists of saintly patronage do not assign her particular causes. Her memory has been preserved primarily in the liturgical books of the Orthodox Churches and in the brief entry of the Roman Martyrology. The discrepancy of one day between Western and Eastern commemorations is a common result of the separate formation of those calendars. For the historian, Melitina remains an obscure second-century martyr of the Thracian-Moesian region, known through a conventional passio and through the fact of her liturgical commemoration rather than through a richly documented biography.
