Biography

Short Description

Saint Melor (also known as Melorius, Melar, Méloir, and Mylor) is a saint of early medieval Brittany and Cornwall, commemorated as a child prince and martyr. The surviving accounts of his life belong to Breton and Insular hagiography and were composed centuries after the period in which he is supposed to have lived, generally the fifth or sixth century. No contemporary chronicle or inscription confirms his existence, and historians therefore treat him as a figure of cult and legend rather than as a person whose biography can be established with documentary certainty. His name is attached to churches and dedications on both sides of the English Channel, reflecting the close religious ties between Armorica, Cornwall, and Wessex in the early Middle Ages.

According to the medieval legend, Melor was the son of Meliau, a ruler of Cornouaille in Brittany. Meliau was murdered by his own brother, Rivod, who seized power and then sought to eliminate Melor as the rightful heir. Advisers dissuaded Rivod from killing the child outright and instead had Melor mutilated so that, under the customs of the time, he could not inherit or rule: his right hand and left foot were cut off. Silver and bronze prostheses were fitted in their place. Hagiographers relate that the silver hand behaved as a living limb and that other wonders attended the boy. Melor was then placed in a monastery to be raised, a setting often associated in the tradition with the region of Lanmeur in what is now Finistère.

While Melor was still a child—some versions of the story give his age as seven, others as fourteen—Rivod, still fearing him as a rival, induced a guardian or servant, named in the texts as Cerialtan or a similar form, to murder him. The boy was beheaded. The legend continues with a series of miracles connected with the severed head: it is said to have spoken, to have caused a spring to rise, or to have become miraculously heavy so that the assassin could not carry it away. The murderer is described as coming to a wretched end. These motifs are characteristic of Insular martyr legends and of stories of speaking-head saints, and they cannot be read as historical reportage.

The principal Breton centre of Melor's cult was Lanmeur, where the church of Saint-Mélar and an associated crypt were venerated as the place of his tomb. In Cornwall the parish of Mylor near Falmouth bears his name, and other dedications in the southwest of Britain are linked to him. Amesbury Abbey in Wiltshire claimed relics of Saint Melor and observed his feast, helping to spread the cult in Anglo-Saxon and later medieval England. He is generally commemorated on 1 October. Because the written lives are late and heavily miraculous, the historical Melor—if a single historical person lies behind the legend at all—cannot be dated or located with precision; what is certain is the durability of his cult in Brittany, Cornwall, and at Amesbury from the Middle Ages onward.
