Biography

Short Description

Saint Memnon, often styled Memnon the Wonderworker or the Venerable Memnon, is an Egyptian monastic saint commemorated in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Almost everything that can be said of him derives from brief notices in the Byzantine and Slavic synaxaria rather than from contemporary documents. Those notices describe him as a monk of Egypt who became igumen of a monastery and who received the gift of miracles. Traditional Orthodox sources, including the Prologue of Ohrid of Saint Nikolai Velimirovich and the menologion of the Orthodox Church in America, state that he died in the second century. That dating cannot be confirmed independently. Organized coenobitic monasticism with an igumen, of the kind the synaxaria presuppose, is historically attested in Egypt mainly from the fourth century, in the Thebaid and in the desert of Scetis. It is therefore possible that the second-century date is legendary, that the saint lived later, or that an earlier ascetic was later described in the language of classical desert monasticism. His year of birth, the precise town of his origin, the year of his death, and the place of his burial are all unknown.

According to the hagiographical tradition, Memnon embraced the monastic life from his youth in the Egyptian desert, in the region of the Thebaid near Skete. He is said to have become the igumen of one of the monasteries of Egypt. The synaxaria emphasize extreme fasting: he did not eat bread, but only vegetables, and those only rarely. Through long ascesis he was believed to have purified his heart of the passions and to have been granted by God the power to work wonders. He is not associated with any later named religious order; his context is that of early Egyptian monasticism. There is no record that he was ever married or that he had children, and the tradition that he was a monk from youth implies a celibate life. He did not hold episcopal office and was neither patriarch nor pope.

The miracles ascribed to him during his lifetime follow patterns familiar from the literature of the Desert Fathers. By prayer he is said to have driven a plague of locusts from the fields that they were destroying. In a waterless place he is said to have caused a spring of water to burst from the ground, so that the monastic community had water to drink. He is credited with healing the sick and with expelling demons. These stories are preserved as liturgical commemoration rather than as events that can be dated or located with precision. They present Memnon as a classic wonderworking abbot of the Egyptian desert.

The tradition holds that he died in peace, not by martyrdom. After his death, miracles continued to be attributed to his intercession. A story often repeated in the synaxaria tells of sailors caught in a storm who invoked Memnon and were saved when he appeared to them, which is why he is sometimes remembered in connection with those in peril at sea, though he is not formally listed among the great maritime patrons. His principal feast in the Russian Orthodox and related calendars is 28 April; some Greek calendars commemorate him on 29 April, and some Western or popular lists give 27 April. He was not canonized by a named pope of Rome according to the later Latin process of canonization; his cult is that of an early saint received into the liturgical books of the East. No reliable source records a specific shrine as his burial place. Beyond the synaxarion notices, the historical Memnon remains obscure, and caution is required in treating the second-century date and the miracle stories as established fact.
