Biography

Short Description

Saint Memorius, also known in French as Mémoire, is remembered as a deacon and martyr of the church of Troyes in fifth-century Gaul. Nothing independent of later liturgical tradition can be established about his birth, family, or early life. He enters the record only as a cleric serving under Lupus, bishop of Troyes (died c. 478), a historically attested Gallic bishop formed in the monastic circle of Lérins who was active in the church of mid-fifth-century Gaul.

The one episode attached to Memorius belongs to Attila’s invasion of Gaul in 451. According to the account preserved in the Roman Martyrology and in later compilations such as Alban Butler’s Lives of the Saints, Bishop Lupus went out to meet Attila and obtained a promise that the city of Troyes itself would be spared. A detachment of the Hunnic army nevertheless continued to ravage the surrounding countryside. Lupus then sent Memorius, together with five companions, as envoys to the Hunnic camp in the hope of securing protection for the territory of Troyes.

The embassy ended in their deaths. Memorius and the five companions were killed by the Huns. Traditional chronology places the martyrdom in 451, the year of Attila’s Gallic campaign and of the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains. No contemporary narrative independent of the later martyrological notices survives, and the companions remain unnamed in the principal sources. The Roman Martyrology commemorates them on 7 September at Troyes in Gaul as Saint Memorius, deacon, and five companions, martyrs.

Their cult is that of ancient local martyrs later received into the Latin martyrology. There is no evidence of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; veneration rests on long-standing liturgical commemoration. The place of burial, any translation of relics, and particular patronages are not documented in verifiable sources. Memorius remains an obscure figure whose memory is preserved almost entirely through the brief martyrological notice linking him to the Hunnic crisis of 451 and to the pastoral action of Bishop Lupus of Troyes.
