Biography

Short Description

Menulphus (also rendered Menulphe, Menou, Menulf, or Menulph) is a saint of the Western Church whose historical biography is extremely thin and whose memory is preserved chiefly through local cult in central France. Virtually all that is known of him comes from late medieval and early modern tradition attached to the village now called Saint-Menoux in the former province of Bourbonnais (département of Allier). That tradition, which cannot be corroborated by contemporary documents, places him in the seventh century and presents him as an Irishman, sometimes of princely birth, who was consecrated a bishop in Ireland and who afterwards travelled to Rome as a pilgrim. No reliable year of birth has been preserved, and statements that assign him a precise date of office or of birth rest on conjecture rather than evidence.

On his return journey through Gaul, according to the same legend, Menulphus stopped at the settlement of Mailly (Latin forms such as Mailiacum). He is credited with miracles, among them the raising of a child from the dead, and he is said to have remained in the district until his death, either continuing to exercise an episcopal ministry or living as a hermit. He was buried at Mailly. Devotion to his tomb led to the renaming of the place as Saint-Menoux. In the Middle Ages a Benedictine priory was established there, dependent on larger houses, and a substantial Romanesque church was built over the site. The church still stands and houses a tomb identified as that of the saint, which became the focus of pilgrimage. Claims that he occupied the see of Quimper or another named diocese rest on late and doubtful identifications and are not supported by early episcopal lists.

A particular popular devotion developed around an aperture in or near the tomb, known as the débredinoire. Local people passed the heads of those regarded as simple-minded or mentally disturbed (in the Bourbonnais dialect, bredins) through this opening in the hope of obtaining a cure. The practice, recorded in later centuries, associated Menulphus in folk religion with the relief of mental affliction, although this patronage was never the subject of a universal liturgical decree. The feast of Saint Menulphus has been kept on 12 July in the calendars of the region, notably in what became the Diocese of Moulins. His relics and the Romanesque church remain the principal material witnesses to the cult.

Critical hagiography regards Menulphus as an obscure holy man of the early Middle Ages, possibly an insular peregrinus or a local evangelizer, around whom a conventional Irish-bishop-and-Rome-pilgrim legend later crystallized. No authentic vita from near his own time survives, and no year of death can be established from reliable evidence. He was not Bishop of Rome, nor a patriarch or catholicos of an Eastern see. Nothing certain is known of any marriage, children, or membership in a religious order. His saintly status derives from immemorial local cultus rather than from a formal process of canonization in the later medieval or modern papal manner.
