Biography

Short Description

Mercedes de Jesús Egido, born Mercedes Egido Izquierdo in 1935 in Salamanca, Spain, was a Roman Catholic nun of the Order of Saint Clare, the enclosed Second Order of the Franciscan family commonly called the Poor Clares. That order traces its origin to Saint Clare of Assisi in the thirteenth century and is characterized by contemplative prayer, papal enclosure, and a vowed life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Egido entered this form of religious life in the mid-twentieth century and remained a cloistered sister until her death. Relatively little about her childhood, education, or family circumstances is recorded in widely available historical notices; what is consistently attested is her Salamanca origin and her lifelong identification with the Clarian vocation under the religious name Mercedes de Jesús.

Her principal importance within Franciscan and Poor Clare history lies in the work she undertook on the original Rule of Saint Clare. That Rule, confirmed by Pope Innocent IV in 1253 shortly before Clare’s death, expressed Clare’s intention that her sisters live in radical evangelical poverty, without property of their own, in spiritual association with the Friars Minor. In later centuries many Poor Clare monasteries came to observe subsequent papal legislation, notably the Rule of Urban IV of 1263, which permitted mitigations. In the decades after the Second Vatican Council, when the Catholic Church asked religious institutes to recover the charism of their founders, Mercedes de Jesús studied the early Clarian sources and urged a more faithful return to Clare’s own forma vitae, especially regarding poverty and the distinctive identity of the Second Order.

She lived her monastic life in Spain and in her later years was associated with the Poor Clare monastery at Lerma in the province of Burgos. She died there in 2004. She was never married and had no children, in keeping with the celibate enclosed life of a Poor Clare. She held no episcopal or papal office.

After her death, interest in her writings and in her reputation for holiness continued in some Franciscan circles, and steps toward a possible cause of beatification have been mentioned in Catholic sources, which sometimes style her a Servant of God. She has not been beatified or canonized by the Catholic Church, has no universally assigned feast day, and is not the subject of an official list of patronages. Standard biographical coverage remains limited, and much of what is known about her belongs to the internal history of twentieth-century Poor Clare renewal rather than to a large public cult.
