Biography

Short Description

Saint Mesmin, known in Latin as Maximinus and in later French usage as Mesmin, was an early sixth-century monk and abbot whose memory is bound up with the monastery of Micy, near Orléans, in the Loire valley of Frankish Gaul. Medieval hagiography presents him as a native of Verdun and as the nephew of Saint Euspicius, a priest of that city. The traditional narrative places these events in the reign of Clovis I. After Clovis’s conversion, the king laid siege to Verdun. Euspicius went out to plead for the town; Clovis, moved by his character, is said not only to have spared Verdun but to have granted Euspicius a royal estate at Micy, at the meeting of the Loire and the Loiret, for the establishment of a monastic community. Mesmin accompanied his uncle from Verdun to Micy and lived there as a monk under Euspicius, who became the first abbot.

When Euspicius died, Mesmin was chosen as his successor and governed Micy as its second abbot. The community is counted among the early monastic foundations of Frankish Gaul. Because Mesmin’s abbacy belongs to the first decades of the sixth century, the monks cannot have followed the Rule of Saint Benedict, which was written later in Italy and spread in Gaul only in subsequent generations; they observed an older Gallic monastic custom. Later ages nonetheless often associated Micy with the Benedictine tradition. Under Mesmin the house is said to have flourished and to have attracted disciples. Almost all narrative detail about his government comes from vitae composed centuries afterward, notably traditions preserved at Micy itself, and must be treated with caution as history. Independent contemporary documentation of his birth, the exact chronology of his career, and many of the episodes in the later lives is lacking.

Hagiographical legend attributes miracles to Mesmin, the most famous of which is the slaying of a dragon. The creature was said to dwell in a cave beside the Loire and to ravage the surrounding country. Mesmin confronted and overcame it, thereby delivering the people—a motif common in the lives of many late antique and early medieval saints and often read as a symbol of the defeat of paganism or of evil. He is traditionally reported to have died on 15 December in the year 520 and to have been buried at his monastery. His tomb became a focus of local cult. The house itself came to be known as Saint-Mesmin de Micy. Relics associated with him were kept there through the Middle Ages, though the abbey later suffered the usual fortunes of war, reform, and eventually dissolution.

Liturgical commemoration of Mesmin was established on 15 December. His name was given to several French parishes and communes, including Saint-Mesmin in the Aube, in the Côte-d’Or, and in the Vendée; other places called Saint-Mesmin may honor a different holy figure of the same name. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that a monastic founder and abbot of this name was venerated from an early date at Micy and in the diocese of Orléans, that his cult belongs to the first flowering of Frankish monasticism in the Loire region, and that later medieval writers elaborated his legend in the conventional language of saints’ lives. He was never Bishop of Rome or a patriarch, and he is remembered as a monk and abbot of Micy rather than as a member of a later, formally constituted religious order.
