Biography

Short Description

Mesrop Mashtots was born in the village of Hatsik (Hatsekats) in the canton of Taron in the Kingdom of Armenia. The principal contemporary source for his life is the fifth-century biography written by his pupil Koryun, which names his father as Vardan. Traditional chronology places the birth in 362. He received a broad education in Greek, Syriac, and Persian, the languages then used in administration, diplomacy, and Christian worship in a country that still lacked a script of its own. As a young man he served in the royal chancellery of the Arsacid court as a secretary, gaining experience in official correspondence. He later left court service, adopted an ascetic monastic life, and was ordained a priest. While preaching in the district of Goghtn he became convinced that Christian teaching could not take deep root among Armenians so long as Scripture and liturgy remained confined to foreign tongues.

With the backing of Catholicos Sahak Partev and King Vramshapuh, Mashtots set out to create an Armenian alphabet. In the early fifth century he traveled to Mesopotamian centers of learning, including Edessa and Samosata, to study existing scripts. In Samosata, working with a Greek calligrapher known as Rufinus (Hropanos), he shaped a distinctive alphabet of thirty-six letters fitted to Armenian phonology. Tradition dates the invention to about 405. The first words written in the new letters were taken from the Book of Proverbs. Returning to Armenia, Mashtots and Sahak directed the translation of the Bible, at first from Syriac and later, when better Greek manuscripts became available, from the Greek. That classical Armenian version became the foundation of Armenian literature and church life.

Mashtots founded schools across historic Armenia so that clergy and laity could learn the new letters. He and his disciples translated liturgical books, patristic writings, and other Christian texts, and he composed hymns (sharakans) that entered the Armenian rite. Armenian tradition, following Koryun, also credits him with a role in devising alphabets for Georgian and Caucasian Albanian; modern scholarship treats those claims cautiously and notes independent local traditions, especially for Georgian. In later years he continued to teach and to organize monastic and educational communities. He died on 17 February 440 in Vagharshapat and was buried at Oshakan, where a church dedicated to him stands over his tomb.

He is venerated as a saint in the Armenian Apostolic Church and is also commemorated in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic calendars, commonly on 17 February and, in the Armenian Church, among the Holy Translators. Koryun’s Life remains the chief near-contemporary witness. The alphabet he created, later expanded by two letters, has been in continuous use for more than sixteen centuries and is regarded as a cornerstone of Armenian religious and national identity.
