Biography

Short Description

Saint Metranus, also recorded in Greek as Metras (Μητρᾶς), was a Christian of Alexandria in Roman Egypt who was martyred at the opening of the persecution under the emperor Decius. Almost nothing is known of his birth, family, occupation, or earlier life. The sole substantial ancient testimony is a contemporary letter of Dionysius, bishop of Alexandria, written to Fabius of Antioch and later excerpted by Eusebius of Caesarea in the sixth book of the Ecclesiastical History. Dionysius places Metranus first among those seized in the city when the imperial edict requiring sacrifice to the gods was enforced.

The Decian persecution of 249–251 was the first coordinated, empire-wide attempt by the Roman state to compel Christians to demonstrate political loyalty through a public act of sacrifice. In Alexandria the edict was applied with particular ferocity by both officials and pagan crowds. Dionysius describes how the populace dragged Christians to the temples and tried to force them to sacrifice or to blaspheme; those who refused were tortured and lynched in the streets. Metranus, portrayed as an elderly man of the local church, was among the earliest victims of this outbreak.

When ordered to utter blasphemous words against God, Metranus refused. The mob then beat him with clubs and drove sharp reeds into his face and eyes. After this mutilation he was led outside the city and stoned to death in the suburbs. The same letter of Dionysius records several other Alexandrian martyrs of those days, including the woman Quinta, who was likewise dragged and stoned, and the aged virgin Apollonia. Historians date these events to approximately the year 250, at the very beginning of the persecution.

The Roman Martyrology entered his name on 31 January, the date on which the Latin Church still commemorates him. Eastern calendars likewise remember him among the early martyrs of Egypt, though no independent passion narrative survives. No burial site, relics, or later miracle stories are attested in the extant sources. Because the account derives from a bishop writing within a few years of the events rather than from a later legendary passio, the outline of his death is regarded as historically reliable, even while virtually every personal detail of his life remains unknown.

Metranus therefore stands as a representative of the otherwise anonymous lay Christians of third-century Alexandria who chose death rather than apostasy when the Roman Empire first demanded a universal act of religious conformity. His brief notice in Dionysius and Eusebius, together with the liturgical memory of 31 January, constitutes the entire historical record.
