Biography

Short Description

Saint Metrophanes was bishop of Byzantium in the early fourth century and is commemorated in the Eastern Orthodox Church as the first of the bishops of that see to be widely remembered by name in later liturgical tradition. Almost nothing about him can be established from contemporary fourth-century documents. The narrative of his life is drawn from later Byzantine patriarchal catalogues and synaxaria, which are not independent historical witnesses and which disagree among themselves on chronology. According to that tradition, his father Dometius was a brother of the Roman emperor Probus (reigned 276–282). After converting to Christianity, Dometius is said to have left Rome for Byzantium, where Bishop Titus ordained him priest; Dometius later succeeded Titus as bishop, and Dometius’s sons Probus and then Metrophanes followed him on the episcopal throne. These kinship claims and the three-generation succession are not confirmed by any surviving imperial or conciliar source and should be treated as later legend attached to the see.

Official succession lists of the Church of Constantinople conventionally date Metrophanes’s episcopate from about 306 to 314, after which Alexander appears as bishop. Orthodox liturgical sources, however, present Metrophanes as still living at the time of the First Council of Nicaea in 325: advanced age is said to have kept him from attending in person, so that he sent Alexander, his priest and eventual successor, as his representative. The same tradition holds that when Constantine the Great determined to make Byzantium his new capital, he wished to honour its bishop, but Metrophanes, already elderly, recommended Alexander. Synaxaria give his death as 326. The two date-schemes (episcopate ending in 314 versus death in 326 after Nicaea) cannot both be taken as precise; they reflect overlapping strands of later tradition rather than a single securely documented career. In Metrophanes’s lifetime the bishop of Byzantium was still a suffragan of the metropolitan of Heraclea in Thrace. Later Orthodox usage styles him Patriarch of Constantinople, an anachronistic title: the see was ranked among the patriarchates only in subsequent centuries, above all from the Council of Chalcedon (451) onward.

No writings by Metrophanes survive, and there is no reliable contemporary evidence for his pastoral activity, theological stance, or personal life. Nothing verifiable is known of a spouse or children, nor of membership in any later-style religious order; fourth-century episcopal celibacy practice varied and cannot be inferred for him from silence. He was not Bishop of Rome. His recognition as a saint belongs to the early local and Byzantine cultus rather than to a later formal process of canonization or beatification by a named authority. He is commemorated on 4 June. Churches in Constantinople were later dedicated to him, but no well-attested list of specific patronages (places, professions, or causes) has been established in the sources. The historical Metrophanes thus remains an obscure figure around whom the Church of Constantinople subsequently gathered a founding-era memory linking its bishop with Constantine, Nicaea, and the rise of the new capital.
