Biography

Michał Piaszczyński was born on 1 September 1885 in Łomża, in the northeastern Polish lands then under Russian imperial administration. He received his priestly formation at the diocesan seminary in Sejny and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1911. He belonged to the secular clergy rather than to a religious order and spent his ministry as a diocesan priest, combining parish work with teaching. After Poland regained independence he was associated with the Diocese of Łomża, erected in 1925, and became known as an educator of youth and of candidates for the priesthood.

In the interwar years he taught and held formational posts connected with Church schools in the Łomża region. He served as rector of the Lower Seminary in Łomża, overseeing the intellectual and spiritual preparation of young men considering priestly life. Contemporary notices present him as a conscientious teacher and a priest of unobtrusive charity rather than as a public controversialist. His work remained local and pastoral until the collapse of the Polish state in 1939.

German occupation brought a systematic campaign against the Polish clergy and intelligentsia. Piaszczyński was arrested by the German security police in the spring of 1940, held in prisons in occupied Poland, and deported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp north of Berlin. There, according to accounts preserved among fellow prisoners, he continued to show concern for others and is remembered for sharing his own scant bread ration with a starving Jewish inmate. Camp conditions of forced labor, hunger, and disease rapidly undermined his health.

He died in Sachsenhausen on 18 December 1940, at the age of fifty-five. His remains were not recovered for Christian burial; victims of that camp were customarily cremated. On 13 June 1999, during a Mass in Warsaw, Pope John Paul II beatified him together with 107 other Polish martyrs of the Second World War. The group is commemorated on 12 June. Piaszczyński has not been canonized and is not recorded as patron of any particular place, profession, or cause apart from his place among those martyrs.
