Biography

Michel Garicoïts was born on 15 April 1797 in Ibarre, a village in the former province of Lower Navarre in the French Basque Country, today in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques. He came from a poor farming household and spent his childhood as a shepherd and labourer. The Church in southwestern France was still rebuilding after the Revolution, which had left many parishes without priests. He felt a vocation to the priesthood from a young age, but his family's lack of means delayed his education. Assisted by local priests, he studied at Saint-Palais and in the seminaries of the Diocese of Bayonne and was ordained a priest in December 1823.

After ordination he served as a curate at Cambo and was then appointed professor at the diocesan seminary of Larressore. In the early 1830s he was entrusted with the former religious house and pilgrimage sanctuary of Our Lady of Bétharram in the Pyrenean foothills, together with the formation of seminarians there. At Bétharram he gathered priests into a common life so that they might be ready for preaching, the education of youth, and other work requested by the bishops. From this community arose the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Bétharram. Its spirituality centred on devotion to the Sacred Heart and on the self-offering of Christ, summed up in an attitude of availability often expressed as Here I am.

As first superior of the congregation, Garicoïts sought to give his priests a serious interior formation, a spirit of obedience, and a willingness to go wherever they were sent. He remained closely tied to the shrine of Our Lady of Bétharram and to the Diocese of Bayonne, and he had to navigate the usual difficulties of a new foundation, including the drafting of constitutions and relations with diocesan authority. Those who knew him emphasized his humility, personal austerity, and insistence on the conversion of the priest's own heart. The congregation took on colleges and missionary tasks in France and later established houses beyond France.

He died at Bétharram on 14 May 1863. A popular reputation for holiness developed in the Basque country and among the Betharram Fathers. His cause was introduced in due course; Pope Pius XI beatified him on 10 May 1923, and Pope Pius XII canonized him on 6 July 1947. The Church keeps his feast on 14 May. He is remembered as a nineteenth-century Basque priest-founder who shaped a congregation dedicated to the Sacred Heart, to priestly formation, and to ready service of the Church's pastoral needs.
