Biography

Short Description

Michael Hồ Đình Hy (also written Michael Ho Dinh Hy) was a Vietnamese Catholic layman and a mandarin of the Nguyễn dynasty who was put to death for his faith in the mid-nineteenth century. He was born in 1808 in Vietnam, in the realm then commonly called Annam or Đại Nam. He came from a prosperous background and entered the imperial civil service, rising to a high administrative rank. Catholic sources consistently identify him as superintendent or director of the royal silk workshops, an office attached to the court at Huế that placed him among the more prominent officials of the reign. He was not a cleric and belonged to no religious order; his public life was that of a married court official.

He converted to Roman Catholicism and received the baptismal name Michael. As a married layman and head of a household, he practiced the faith in a period when Christianity was increasingly treated as a crime against the state. Despite the legal danger, he used his wealth and standing to support the Catholic community, including by assisting priests and fellow believers. Hagiographical accounts of the Vietnamese mandarin-martyrs of this era describe him as generous toward the poor and as remaining openly attached to Christian practice even as imperial edicts against the Church grew harsher under Emperor Tự Đức.

In the 1850s a severe wave of persecution struck Vietnamese Catholics. Hồ Đình Hy was denounced as a Christian, arrested, and subjected to torture intended to force him to recant. He refused to apostatize. After imprisonment and prolonged suffering he was condemned to death and beheaded on 22 May 1857 at An Hòa, near the imperial capital of Huế in central Vietnam. His death belongs to the same cycle of Tự Đức-era executions that later supplied a large share of the martyrs of Vietnam recognized by the Catholic Church.

The Church subsequently honored him among those martyrs. He was beatified by Pope Pius X on 2 May 1909 as part of a group of Vietnamese confessors, and was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 19 June 1988 among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam (Andrew Dũng-Lạc and companions). In the General Roman Calendar he is commemorated with those companions on 24 November; 22 May is the anniversary of his own martyrdom. He is remembered as a married lay official who forfeited rank and life rather than abandon the Catholic faith.
