Biography

Short Description

Michael of Klopsk, known in Russian as Mikhail Klopsky, was a fifteenth-century monk and fool-for-Christ of the Novgorod land. Almost nothing about his early life can be established from independent records. The principal sources are hagiographical Lives that survive in several recensions, a shorter form and later expanded forms, copied from the late fifteenth century onward and taken into sixteenth-century menologia. According to this tradition, an unidentified man appeared at the Holy Trinity Monastery at Klopsk, on the Veryazha River some twenty versts from Novgorod, around 1408 or in the early 1410s. He entered the church during the liturgy and sang with the choir. When the monks and Abbot Theodosius asked his name and origin, he answered only by repeating their questions. The community received him as a brother. Later, longer redactions claim that he belonged to the Moscow princely house and was recognized as a kinsman by Prince Konstantin Dmitrievich, a son of Dmitry Donskoy, when that prince visited the monastery. This genealogy is a hagiographical assertion, not a fact confirmed by secular documents; his true origin remains unknown.

At Klopsk he lived as a yurodivy, joining coenobitic obedience to the rags, silence, and enigmatic speech of Orthodox holy foolishness. The Lives describe severe fasting, night prayer, and a refusal to explain himself in ordinary language. They also ascribe to him clairvoyance. He is said to have foretold famine and other troubles in the Novgorod region, to have rebuked the powerful, and to have spoken of events in the Muscovite princely strife of the mid-fifteenth century. Episodes involving Dmitry Shemyaka, Grand Prince Vasily II, and Archbishop Jonah of Novgorod belong to this prophetic cycle. Because the texts were shaped while Novgorod’s independence was ending and Muscovite rule was being celebrated, historians treat the political prophecies with caution, as a blend of local memory and later literary construction. What remains consistent is the portrait of an ascetic who used folly as spiritual teaching and social rebuke.

He spent the rest of his attested life at the Klopsk monastery and died there in the middle of the fifteenth century. Orthodox calendars keep his repose on 11 January; the year is given in the tradition as 1453 or 1456 and cannot be fixed with certainty. He was buried at the Holy Trinity Monastery of Klopsk. Local veneration grew in the Novgorod region. Inclusion of his Life in the large hagiographical collections associated with Metropolitan Macarius of Moscow in the sixteenth century helped carry his cult beyond Novgorod. The Russian Orthodox Church commemorates him on 11 January and also observes 23 June in connection with the uncovering of his relics. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office.

No contemporary source records a wife or children; the whole of his known career is that of a celibate monk and holy fool. Specific patronages of cities, trades, or illnesses are not securely documented. The Klopsk monastery, which kept his tomb, remained the centre of his memory. For the historian he is both a figure of late medieval Novgorodian piety and a reminder of how little can be verified about even a well-known Russian saint once later layers of the Life are set aside: a nameless stranger who arrived at a riverside monastery in the early fifteenth century, lived there in foolishness for Christ, and was remembered as a prophet and wonderworker after his death.
