Biography

Short Description

Michele Rua, often known in English as Michael Rua, was born in Turin on 9 June 1837, in what was then the Kingdom of Sardinia. He was the youngest of nine children of Giovanni Battista Rua, a worker at the royal arms factory, and Joanna Maria Ferrero. His father died when Michele was still a child, leaving the family in straitened circumstances. In the mid-nineteenth century he came into contact with the priest John Bosco and the oratory at Valdocco, which gathered poor and working boys of Turin for religious instruction, schooling, and recreation. Rua became one of Bosco’s earliest and closest pupils and collaborators, and he was among the small group who, in December 1859, formed the nucleus of the Society of St. Francis de Sales, later known as the Salesians of Don Bosco.

Rua was ordained a priest in 1860. He served in formative and administrative posts within the young congregation, including as director of the Salesian house at Mirabello and later as prefect at Valdocco. Don Bosco came to regard him as his most trusted assistant and, with papal approval in the 1880s, obtained recognition of Rua as vicar with the right of succession. Rua also played a significant role in the early life of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the female institute founded by Bosco with Maria Domenica Mazzarello, serving in a position of spiritual direction. Throughout Bosco’s later years he shared the founder’s labours in governing the congregation, training members, and extending its works of education and youth ministry in Italy and beyond.

After John Bosco’s death in January 1888, Rua became the second Rector Major of the Salesian Society, an office he held until his own death. Under his government the congregation expanded rapidly in membership, houses, and geographic reach, moving from a still largely Italian body to a worldwide institute with foundations in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, and elsewhere. He travelled extensively to visit communities, insisted on fidelity to the founder’s spirit and constitutions, and promoted missionary work, schools, and oratories for poor youth. Contemporaries described him as austere, methodical, and wholly identified with Don Bosco’s project, earning him the informal title of the founder’s “living rule.”

Rua died in Turin on 6 April 1910. He was buried in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians at Valdocco, the principal Salesian shrine associated with Don Bosco. The Catholic Church later recognized his heroic virtue; he was beatified by Pope Paul VI on 29 October 1972. His liturgical memorial is kept on 29 October. He has not been canonized. Historical accounts treat him as the principal continuer of the Salesian work in the generation after the founder, rather than as a figure surrounded by an independent cult of patronage; no widely attested list of official patronages is attached to his name in standard sources.
