Biography

Short Description

Michel Le Nobletz, known in Breton as Mikael an Nobletz, was born in 1577 at Plouguerneau, a coastal parish in the Léon country of western Brittany, then part of the Kingdom of France. He belonged to a family of the lesser Breton gentry. In the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries he received a humanist and theological education in Jesuit colleges, including the college at Bordeaux. He wished to enter the Society of Jesus but was not admitted, according to the usual accounts because of fragile health. He therefore remained in the secular clergy and was ordained a priest in 1607 for the diocese of Léon (Saint-Pol-de-Léon). He never joined a religious order.

Rather than take a stable parish cure, he devoted himself to itinerant missionary preaching among the Breton-speaking rural and island populations of Lower Brittany. In the early seventeenth century much of Léon, Cornouaille, and the neighboring districts was only incompletely catechized; Breton was the language of the people, while instruction was often scarce or given in French. Le Nobletz preached in Breton and developed a distinctive visual method. He used painted teaching charts, called taolennoù in Breton and cartes peintes in French, emblematic panels depicting the last things, the sacraments, the virtues and vices, and the combat of the soul. With these images he instructed hearers who could not read and sought to fix Catholic doctrine in popular memory. He demanded repentance, frequent confession and communion, and the abandonment of customary practices he regarded as superstitious or immoral, in the spirit of the Catholic Reformation.

His missions took him along the western coasts and to the islands of the Pays d'Iroise, including the district of Ouessant, as well as to inland parishes. He gathered priest collaborators. Among those formed or strongly influenced by his example was Julien Maunoir, who later organized large parish missions throughout Brittany and was beatified in the twentieth century. Le Nobletz’s austerity and the novelty of his charts provoked opposition from some local clergy and from laypeople whose way of life he condemned. He remained a diocesan priest; his missionary technique and spirituality nonetheless owed much to the Jesuit schooling he had received as a student.

In later life he withdrew to the small port of Le Conquet at the western tip of Brittany, where he continued prayer, spiritual direction, and the use of his painted charts. He died there in 1652 and was buried in the town. Breton Catholic tradition has remembered him as a pioneer of seventeenth-century popular missions and of catechesis in the Breton language. A reputation for holiness attached to his name, and a cause for beatification has at times been promoted, but he has not been beatified or canonized by the Catholic Church. The taolennoù associated with his circle survive in Breton churches and museums and remain an important witness to Baroque popular religious pedagogy in France.
