Biography

Short Description

Michel-Louis Brulard was a priest of the Congregation of the Mission who lived in France during the eighteenth century. The Congregation, also known as the Vincentians or Lazarists, had been established by Saint Vincent de Paul to preach missions among the rural poor and to train seminarians. Brulard’s life coincided with the French Revolution, a period that brought the Catholic Church into direct conflict with the new republican authorities. The Civil Constitution of the Clergy, enacted in 1790, required bishops and priests to swear an oath of loyalty to the nation that many regarded as schismatic. Those who refused, called refractory or non-juring clergy, were eventually subject to deportation.

In 1794 Brulard was among a large group of such priests assembled for transport to Guiana. Because of wartime conditions the ships could not sail, and the prisoners were instead packed into two disused slave vessels, the Deux-Associés and the Washington, anchored in the roadstead of Rochefort. Sanitary conditions were catastrophic. The holds were filthy, food and fresh water were insufficient, and contagious diseases spread rapidly. Dozens of priests died in the space of a few months. Michel-Louis Brulard was one of those who succumbed while still in captivity that year.

After the Terror subsided, the remaining prisoners were gradually freed. Interest in the Rochefort victims grew in the nineteenth century, and a cause for beatification was eventually introduced. On 1 October 1995 Pope John Paul II declared sixty-four of them blessed, explicitly including Brulard. The Church judged that they had died in hatred of the faith because they would not accept a reorganization of the Church that severed its connection with Rome.

Surviving documentation about Brulard’s personal history—his exact place and date of birth, his family, and the details of his priestly assignments—is limited. He is therefore remembered chiefly as a member of the Rochefort group rather than as an independently documented figure. The martyrs are honored collectively; their burial place on the small island of Madame in the Charente estuary has become a site of commemoration. They stand as representatives of the many clergy who chose fidelity to the Holy See over compliance with revolutionary religious legislation.
