Biography

Mieczysław Bohatkiewicz was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest of the twentieth century, numbered among the martyrs of the Second World War. He was born on 1 January 1904 in the village of Kryniczno. He received priestly formation connected with the Diocese of Pinsk, which served the eastern borderlands of the interwar Polish Republic, and was ordained in the 1930s. His ministry consisted of ordinary parish work among the Catholic faithful of that region, an area marked by ethnic and religious diversity and by the pastoral needs of Polish Catholics living among Belarusian, Jewish, and other communities.

The successive occupations of eastern Poland during the Second World War placed the local clergy under extreme pressure. After the German invasion of the Soviet-held territories in 1941, Nazi policy toward the Polish Church became openly destructive. Priests were regarded as leaders of Polish national and religious life and were frequently arrested, deported, or killed. Father Bohatkiewicz was detained by the German security police together with two other priests of the same diocese, Władysław Maćkowiak and Stanisław Pyrtek.

The three were imprisoned at Berezwecz. On 4 March 1942 they were taken from prison into a nearby forest and shot. Their execution formed part of the wider assault on the Polish clergy in the occupied East. Later Catholic investigation treated their deaths as having occurred in hatred of the faith, on account of their priestly office and pastoral activity. Contemporary accounts and the documentation assembled for their cause of beatification preserve the outline of these events, though many finer details of Bohatkiewicz’s earlier parish assignments remain known mainly from local diocesan memory.

Pope John Paul II beatified Mieczysław Bohatkiewicz on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw, together with 107 other Polish martyrs of the Second World War. The group is liturgically commemorated on 12 June. Outside specialist literature on the wartime Church in Poland and present-day Belarus, Bohatkiewicz remains a relatively little-known figure, but the principal facts of his birth, priestly identity, arrest, and death are securely established by diocesan records, wartime testimonies, and the acts of the beatification process.
