Biography

Short Description

Miguel Ángel Builes Gómez was a Colombian Roman Catholic bishop who headed the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Osos from 1924 until his death in 1971. He was born on 9 September 1888 in Donmatías, in the Antioquia department of Colombia, a highland municipality in a region long marked by a dense parish network and a strongly Catholic rural culture. He received his ecclesiastical formation in the seminary of Santa Rosa de Osos and was ordained a priest in the 1910s for that diocese. His early ministry unfolded in a country still shaped by the nineteenth-century conflict between the Catholic Church and liberal governments, and by the still-recent memory of the War of a Thousand Days. Those tensions between confessional Catholicism and secularizing politics would remain a constant point of reference in his later teaching.

Pope Pius XI appointed him Bishop of Santa Rosa de Osos in 1924. He was consecrated the same year and remained ordinary of that see for nearly forty-seven years, one of the longest episcopates in modern Colombian history. The diocese covered a largely mountainous and rural territory in Antioquia, with scattered settlements that were often difficult to reach. As bishop he emphasized clerical formation, the multiplication of parishes and chapels, Catholic schooling, and regular pastoral visitation. He cultivated a reputation for personal austerity and for a highly centralized, disciplinarian style of government. Over the decades he became one of the best-known conservative prelates in the Colombian hierarchy, frequently addressing not only strictly religious questions but also the moral and political order of the republic.

A distinctive feature of his episcopate was the foundation of religious institutes intended to supply missionaries, teachers, and contemplatives for work in his diocese and in other underserved areas. The best documented of these is the Institute of Missionaries of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, established in 1929 under the influence of the then recently canonized Thérèse of Lisieux and of the missionary spirituality associated with her. He also promoted other communities of women religious devoted to Eucharistic, Marian, and educational apostolates. These foundations belonged to the wider early-twentieth-century Catholic effort to staff internal missions with locally recruited congregations rather than relying solely on European orders. Builes was a prolific author of pastoral letters and other writings, often written in a severe and polemical register, in which he attacked liberalism, Freemasonry, Protestant missionary activity, and, from the mid-century onward, communist and socialist ideologies.

His public positions placed him among the most intransigent voices in the Latin American Church of his generation and intersected with Colombia’s mid-century partisan bloodshed known as La Violencia, as well as with later debates over social reform and the reception of the Second Vatican Council. Admirers have presented him as a defender of Catholic doctrine, of the poor of the mountains, and of a traditional social order; critics have regarded him as a symbol of clerical intransigence and of the Church’s entanglement in partisan conflict. He died on 29 September 1971 in Medellín. In later years a cause for his beatification was introduced, and he has been referred to in Catholic sources as a Servant of God, though he has not been beatified or canonized. His long tenure, his religious foundations, and his uncompromising public teaching make him a significant and still-debated figure in the religious and political history of twentieth-century Colombia.
