Biography

Short Description

Miguel de Carvalho was born in 1579 in Braga, in northern Portugal. In 1597 he entered the Society of Jesus at Coimbra. After his novitiate and early studies in Portugal he was sent to the Jesuit missions in Portuguese India. At Goa he completed his theological formation and was ordained a priest. For a number of years thereafter he taught theology and engaged in pastoral work among Christian communities in India, including service connected with the Jesuit college at Goa, before seeking assignment to Japan.

By the early seventeenth century the Catholic mission in Japan, which had grown rapidly in the later 1500s, was under systematic persecution by the Tokugawa shogunate. Churches were destroyed, missionaries were hunted, and Japanese Christians were pressed to apostatize under threat of torture and death. Carvalho obtained permission to go to that mission and reached Japan around 1621. There he ministered in secret to remaining believers, working under the conditions of concealment and constant danger that marked the underground Church of that period.

He was later arrested in the domain of Ōmura, a territory that had once been an important centre of Japanese Christianity but whose rulers had turned to enforcing the anti-Christian edicts. He was imprisoned together with missionaries of other religious orders. After a lengthy confinement, on 25 August 1624 he was executed by burning at the stake at Ōmura. Those who died with him that day were the Dominican Pedro Vázquez, the Franciscans Luis Sotelo and Luis Sasada, and the Franciscan tertiary Luis Baba.

Pope Pius IX beatified Miguel de Carvalho on 7 May 1867 as one of the group later known as the 205 Martyrs of Japan. He has not been canonized. His individual memorial is kept on 25 August, the day of his martyrdom, and he is also commemorated with the larger body of Japanese martyrs. Jesuit and Portuguese Catholic tradition remember him as a priest who left a teaching career in India to share the fate of the persecuted Church in early seventeenth-century Japan.
