Biography

Short Description

Francisco Luis Febres-Cordero y Muñoz was born on 7 November 1854 in Cuenca, in the Ecuadorian highlands, into a distinguished and devout Catholic family. He was born with a clubfoot and a frail constitution, limitations that marked his childhood and remained with him throughout life. Despite these physical constraints he showed unusual intellectual ability and a strong attraction to study and to religious practice. In the 1860s the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the teaching congregation founded in France by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, established themselves in Ecuador. Drawn to their mission of Christian education, especially of ordinary youth and the poor, he entered their novitiate in 1868, receiving the religious name Miguel. He thus became the first native Ecuadorian to join the institute, against some family hesitation from relatives who had hoped he would follow a secular career and who feared that his disability would prove an obstacle.

Brother Miguel spent nearly four decades as a classroom teacher, principally at the Brothers’ college in Quito. He taught Spanish language and literature, religion, and related subjects, and came to be regarded as one of the outstanding educators of his generation in Ecuador. He wrote numerous textbooks of grammar, literature, linguistics, and catechesis that were widely used in Ecuadorian schools and elsewhere in Spanish-speaking America. His scholarly work led to membership in the Ecuadorian Academy of Language and corresponding membership in the Royal Spanish Academy. Students and fellow Brothers remembered him as a patient, methodical, and affectionate teacher who gave particular care to weaker pupils, as a religious of regular observance, and as a man of marked humility who did not seek prominence despite his intellectual reputation. He also composed verse and works of piety.

In 1907 he traveled to Europe in connection with a general chapter of his congregation and other congregational business. Political conditions in Ecuador, then under a liberal and anticlerical government, made his return impossible. He remained in Europe, teaching for a time in Belgium and afterward at the Brothers’ house in Premià de Mar, near Barcelona in Catalonia. His always delicate health declined; he contracted pneumonia and died there on 9 February 1910. He was first buried in Spain. In later decades his remains were translated to Quito, where they have been venerated by the faithful and by the Lasallian community.

Devotion to Brother Miguel spread in Ecuador and throughout the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He was beatified by Pope Paul VI on 30 October 1977 and canonized by Pope John Paul II on 21 October 1984. He is honored as a model of the consecrated Christian teacher and as the first male saint born in Ecuador. His liturgical memorial is kept on 9 February, and he is invoked as a patron of Ecuador and of teachers.
