Biography

Short Description

Miguel Maura y Montaner remains a poorly documented figure in the printed historical record. Major national biographical dictionaries of Spain, the standard lists of deputies and senators of the Restoration Cortes, the episcopal catalogues, and the usual hagiographical repertoires do not supply a securely sourced birth year, death year, or curriculum vitae for a public person of this exact name. The surnames themselves are Spanish, and the conjunction y Montaner follows the Castilian form of a double surname; Montaner is a well-attested family name in Catalonia and especially in Mallorca. That onomastic pattern invites comparison with the Maura y Montaner family of Palma de Mallorca, yet comparison is not identification, and no widely cited reliable source has been found that places Miguel, with verified dates, inside that household.

The Maura y Montaner family of Palma is otherwise well known. From a modest background in the city, several siblings of the mid-nineteenth century entered law, politics, and painting. Antonio Maura y Montaner (1853–1925) became one of the leading Conservative statesmen of the Spanish Restoration and served repeatedly as president of the Council of Ministers. His brother Bartolomé Maura y Montaner (1844–1926) was a painter and engraver who directed the National Chalcography in Madrid. Another brother, Francisco Maura y Montaner (1857–1931), was likewise a painter. Biographies of Antonio customarily name these artistic brothers and certain sisters; they do not, in the sources most often used, give a full, dated notice of a brother called Miguel. It is therefore possible that Miguel Maura y Montaner was a more private kinsman, a cousin, or an entirely distinct person who left little mark on national historiography.

No office of pope or patriarch is associated with this name, and he does not appear among the bishops of the Catholic Church in the standard hierarchical lists. There is no evidence of a process of beatification or canonization, no feast day in the Roman Martyrology or in local calendars that can be verified, and no recorded patronage of places, trades, or causes. Membership in a religious order, the name of a spouse, and the existence or non-existence of children are all unconfirmed. Burial place is unknown. In the absence of such facts, it would be improper to invent a chronology or to treat him as a saint, blessed, or prelate.

Readers should also take care not to confuse Miguel Maura y Montaner with Miguel Maura Gamazo (1887–1971), the son of Antonio Maura y Montaner. The younger Miguel, whose maternal surname was Gamazo, was a prominent politician of the Second Spanish Republic and served as Minister of the Interior in 1931; his life is amply documented. The subject of the present notice, by contrast, belongs to the large class of nineteenth- or early twentieth-century Spanish provincials whose traces, if they survive at all, are more likely to be found in parish registers, notarial archives, or local Mallorcan periodicals than in encyclopedias. Until such archival evidence is published and corroborated, dates and places of birth and death must be left blank rather than guessed.
