Biography

Short Description

José Ramón Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez was born on 13 January 1891 in Guadalupe, in the mining state of Zacatecas, Mexico, the son of Miguel Pro, a mining engineer, and Josefa Juárez. The family later lived in various mining centers associated with his father’s work. As a youth he was known for high spirits, practical jokes, and a gift for music, together with a growing interior life. After a period of illness and vocational searching he entered the Jesuit novitiate at El Llano, Michoacán, in 1911. The Mexican Revolution and the anti-clerical measures that followed soon disrupted Jesuit houses in Mexico, and Pro and his companions were forced into exile.

His formation continued abroad. He studied in California, then in Spain, spent time in Nicaragua, and completed theology in Belgium, where he was ordained a priest at Enghien in 1925. Chronic stomach ailments, which had begun in his youth, continued to trouble him. After a short period of ministry among Belgian workers, his superiors sent him back to Mexico in 1926, at the moment when the Calles Law had closed churches, banned public worship, and made the public exercise of the priesthood a crime.

In Mexico City Pro undertook a clandestine apostolate. He celebrated Mass in private houses, brought Communion to the sick and to families in hiding, heard confessions, and organized material help for the poor. To avoid arrest he adopted a series of disguises—mechanic, street vendor, fashionable young man—and moved constantly. His brothers Humberto and Roberto sometimes assisted him. The work was dangerous; several Jesuit companions were already in prison or dead. Letters from this period mix humor with a clear awareness that he might be killed.

In November 1927 a bomb was thrown at the car of former president Álvaro Obregón. Police seeking Catholic scapegoats arrested Miguel Pro and his brothers. Although no evidence linked Miguel to the attack, he was condemned to death without trial. On the morning of 23 November 1927 he was led into the courtyard of the police inspectorate in Mexico City. Photographers had been invited to record the execution as a warning. Pro blessed the soldiers, declined a blindfold, knelt in prayer, then stood with arms outstretched in the form of a cross, a crucifix in one hand and a rosary in the other. His last words were “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” He was shot by firing squad; an officer then delivered a coup de grâce. The photographs, intended as intimidation, circulated instead as images of martyrdom.

Pope John Paul II beatified Miguel Agustín Pro on 25 September 1988, recognizing him as a martyr killed in hatred of the faith. His liturgical memorial is kept on 23 November. He has not been canonized. His remains are venerated at the Church of the Holy Family (Templo de la Sagrada Familia) in Mexico City. He is remembered as a symbol of Catholic resistance during the Cristero-era persecution and as a priest who combined pastoral daring with a distinctive, often humorous, personal style.
