Biography

Short Description

Miguel Remón Salvador was a Spanish Franciscan religious and Catholic martyr, born on 17 September 1907 in Caudiel, a town in the province of Castellón in the Valencian Community of eastern Spain. He entered the Order of Friars Minor and lived as a professed member of that order in the early twentieth century, a period marked in Spain by the political experiments of the Restoration monarchy’s final years and then by the Second Republic after 1931. Publicly available accounts of his childhood, family, and the precise path of his vocation are limited, as is typical for many of the less prominent religious who later figured among the Civil War martyrs; what is firmly attested is his identity as a Franciscan friar in the Castellón region at the outbreak of the war.

The Spanish Civil War began in July 1936. In Republican-controlled zones, including much of the Valencian country, a fierce wave of anticlerical violence followed. Churches and convents were sacked, and bishops, priests, men and women religious, and lay Catholics were imprisoned or killed in large numbers. Miguel Remón Salvador was among those targeted because of his religious state. He was put to death on 3 August 1936 in Castellón. The Catholic Church has judged deaths of this kind to have been suffered in odium fidei, out of hatred for the Christian faith, rather than as ordinary casualties of a political conflict.

Decades of diocesan and Roman investigation into the Spanish martyrs of the 1930s culminated, for a very large group, in a beatification celebrated at Tarragona on 13 October 2013. Miguel Remón Salvador was included among the 522 martyrs of the twentieth century in Spain beatified on that day. Cardinal Angelo Amato, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided in the name of Pope Francis. The ceremony was one of the largest beatifications in the history of the Church and was intended to honor a multitude of relatively obscure victims rather than a handful of already famous names.

As a Blessed, Miguel Remón Salvador is commemorated especially within the Franciscan family and in the local churches of Castellón and Valencia. His memorial is associated with the date of his martyrdom. He has not been the subject of extensive independent biographies, nor are particular widespread patronages customarily attached to his name in standard lists. His witness belongs to the collective memory of the Spanish martyrs of 1936–1939, whose recognition by the Church underscores the scale of religious persecution in that conflict and the fidelity of ordinary religious to their vows under violent pressure.
