Biography

Short Description

Miliau, also known as Meliau, Méliau, or Milliau, is a Breton saint of the early medieval period, traditionally placed in the sixth century. Later hagiographical and genealogical tradition presents him as a prince of Cornouaille, the southwestern Breton kingdom that corresponded roughly to the later diocese of Quimper in what is now Finistère. He is described as the son of Budic, a ruler of Cornouaille, and as the father of the child-martyr Saint Melor (also Melar or Méloir). Almost nothing about his life can be confirmed from contemporary documents. The story of his career and death survives in medieval Breton legend, in the vita of his son Melor, and in local cult and place-name evidence rather than in independent historical record.

The core of the legend holds that after Budic’s death Miliau succeeded to authority in Cornouaille. His brother Rivod (also given as Riwod or Rivodius), coveting the throne, had him seized and put to death. Tradition describes the killing as a beheading, and in Breton religious art Miliau is sometimes shown as a crowned prince and sometimes as a cephalophore, a martyr carrying his own head. He is said to have sought to preserve the life of his young son Melor. Rivod later turned on the boy as well: according to the Life of Saint Melor, the uncle first mutilated the child and subsequently had him murdered, so that the cults of father and son became closely linked in Breton devotion. The tradition therefore treats Miliau as a married lay prince and martyr, not as a monk, bishop, pope, or patriarch, and no reliable source preserves the name of his wife.

The historical value of this narrative is limited. The royal genealogies of Cornouaille were compiled centuries after the events they purport to describe, and the vita of Melor is a medieval hagiographical text rather than a contemporary record. Scholars generally treat Miliau as a figure of sixth-century Armorican tradition whose precise dates, places of birth and death, and even the details of his family relationships cannot be independently verified. No reliable source preserves a birth year. A death date around 531 appears in later compilations, but it belongs to legendary chronology rather than to documented history. What can be said with more confidence is that a cult of Saint Miliau took root in western Brittany and left a lasting mark on the religious landscape.

That cult is most clearly visible in toponymy and parish dedications. Guimiliau in Finistère, whose name means the parish or settlement of Miliau, became the principal centre of his veneration. Its parish church is dedicated to him, and the celebrated parish close of Guimiliau, with church, calvary, and associated structures, made the saint’s name widely known. Ploumilliau in Côtes-d’Armor likewise preserves his name. In these churches he is typically represented as a crowned prince or king, sometimes bearing the palm of martyrdom. His feast has been observed on 5 November. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense; like many early Breton saints he belongs to the era of popular and local recognition.
