Biography

Miroslav Bulešić was born on 13 May 1920 in Čabrunići, a village near Svetvinčenat in Istria, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. He came from a Croatian Catholic farming family and received his early schooling locally before entering seminary. Formation took him to several houses as administrations in the northern Adriatic changed; he completed theology in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University while residing at the Pontifical Croatian College of Saint Jerome. He was ordained a priest in Rome on 11 April 1943, during the Second World War, and returned to Istria for parish ministry.

The end of Italian rule, wartime occupation, and the incorporation of Istria into communist Yugoslavia left the Catholic Church exposed to violence and then to systematic ideological pressure, including restrictions on religious instruction and on the Church’s work with youth. Bulešić served in pastoral assignments and, from 1946, as vice-rector of the diocesan minor seminary in Pazin. He was remembered as energetic, uncompromising in matters of faith, and especially devoted to the religious formation of young people at a time when the new authorities sought to curtail that work.

On 24 August 1947 he went to the mountain parish of Lanišće in the Ćićarija area of northern Istria to assist at the sacrament of Confirmation. After the rite, communist activists who opposed the public celebration and the Church’s influence confronted the clergy. In the parish house Bulešić was stabbed in the neck and died the same day, aged twenty-seven. The Catholic Church has treated the killing as martyrdom in odium fidei, arising from hatred of the faith in the context of the Yugoslav communist campaign against Catholic clergy in Istria.

Local devotion persisted despite the political climate, and a cause for beatification was later introduced. He was recognized as a martyr and beatified on 28 September 2013 in Pula, at a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, acting in the name of Pope Francis. Blessed Miroslav Bulešić is commemorated on 24 August, the anniversary of his death. His tomb in the parish church of Svetvinčenat in Istria has become a place of pilgrimage.
