Biography

Short Description

Saint Mitrius, known in French as Saint Mitre d'Aix and sometimes linked in name with Demetrius, is a Christian martyr whose cult is centered at Aix-en-Provence (ancient Aquae Sextiae) in Provence. Almost everything reported about his life comes from a later hagiographical legend rather than from contemporary records, and historians treat the story as traditional rather than as a recoverable biography. That tradition describes him as a Greek, often said to have come from the region of Thessalonica, who lived in slavery in a household at Aix in late Roman Gaul.

The legend presents Mitrius as a devout Christian slave serving a pagan master, commonly named Arvendus. He is portrayed as given to prayer and credited with wonders. One of the best-known episodes concerns wine in the master's cellar, said to have been miraculously preserved or multiplied through his prayers; members of the household then accused him of theft or of wasting the stores. He is said to have endured beating and other ill-treatment without abandoning his faith. The narrative belongs to a familiar late antique pattern of the holy slave whose virtue exposes a hostile household.

Martyrdom followed. Tradition holds that Mitrius was beheaded at Aix and that his body was thrown into a well, from which it was later recovered. The well and the relics became a focus of local veneration and of reported healings. No reliable contemporary source fixes the year of his death. Later compilations sometimes place the martyrdom in the fifth century and even give the traditional year 466, but that figure is not independently confirmed. He is not recorded as a bishop, patriarch, or pope, nor as a member of a religious order, and nothing historically secure is known of a spouse or children.

Veneration of Mitrius is well established in Provence. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 13 November as a renowned martyr at Aix. He became a patron of Aix-en-Provence; relics were kept in the city's principal churches, including the cathedral of Saint-Sauveur. The nearby commune of Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts in the Bouches-du-Rhône reflects the spread of his cult. As with many early Gallic martyrs, any historical kernel cannot be separated with certainty from later legend, but the liturgical and civic memory of Mitrius at Aix is continuous and well attested in medieval and early modern sources.
