Biography

Short Description

Saint Mitrofan (also spelled Mitrophan or Mitofan) of Voronezh was born in 1623 in the village of Antilokhovo in the Vladimir region of the Tsardom of Russia, into the family of a parish priest. In baptism he received the name Mikhail (Michael). Raised in a pious clerical household of the seventeenth century, he married, was ordained to the priesthood, and served as a parish priest in the same region; hagiographical tradition names the village of Sidorovskoye. He and his wife had a son, Ivan (John), who later became a priest. After his wife’s death he chose the monastic life, entering the Zolotnikovskaya Dormition Hermitage, where he was tonsured with the name Mitrofan.

In 1663 he was appointed hegumen of the Cosmas Monastery on the Yakhroma River. In 1675 he was transferred as hegumen to the Macarius Unzha Monastery in the Kostroma region. His reputation for ascetic discipline and administration led to his selection when a new southern diocese was created. In 1682 a Moscow church council established the Diocese of Voronezh, and Patriarch Joachim of Moscow consecrated Mitrofan as its first bishop. He organized parish life on a still-frontier territory, built and restored churches, opposed the Old Believer schism, and attended to the poor and to the formation of the clergy.

His later episcopate coincided with Tsar Peter I’s Azov campaigns and the building of a Russian fleet at Voronezh on the Don. Mitrofan supported the work with church funds and by encouraging the local population. A well-attested episode records that he refused to enter a residence of the tsar because it contained statues of classical deities, which he regarded as idols; after an initial clash, Peter is said to have had the statues removed. Mitrofan died in Voronezh on 23 November 1703. Peter attended the funeral, showed public grief, and helped carry the coffin. The bishop was buried in the Annunciation cathedral church with which he had been closely associated.

During reconstruction in 1831–1832 his coffin was opened and the remains were reported incorrupt. The Russian Orthodox Church, acting through the Holy Synod, glorified him as a saint in 1832. He is commemorated on 23 November (repose) and 7 August (uncovering of the relics) and is venerated as the heavenly patron of Voronezh. After confiscation and other vicissitudes in the Soviet period, the relics were returned and are again enshrined in Voronezh.
