Biography

Short Description

Mo Ling, also known as Moling, Moling Luachra, and Tairchell, was a seventh-century Irish saint, monastic founder, and bishop of Leinster. Traditional accounts place his birth in 614 in the district of Luachair (Sliabh Luachra) in Munster, a highland region on the borders of present-day Counties Kerry, Cork, and Limerick; the epithet Luachra attached to his name reflects that origin. Medieval hagiography, especially the Latin Vita Sancti Moling and related Irish texts, gives a colourful and largely legendary account of his parentage and infancy, including a story of incestuous conception and of the child being rescued and reared for a religious life. Such motifs are common in early Irish saints' lives and cannot be treated as historical fact. What can be said with more confidence is that he belonged to the monastic culture of seventh-century Ireland and that later tradition linked him firmly with the church of Ferns and with the Barrow valley in Leinster.

He is remembered above all as the founder of the monastery of Tech Moling, later known as St Mullin's, on the River Barrow in what is now County Carlow. The house became an important ecclesiastical centre, later marked by a round tower, high crosses, and a medieval borough. A well-known early Irish gospel book, the Book of Mulling, is associated with the community. According to tradition Mo Ling was the second bishop of Ferns, in succession to Máedóc (Aidan) of Ferns, though the precise chronology of that see in the seventh century is difficult to reconstruct from the surviving sources. He is numbered in some medieval lists among the four great prophets of Ireland. Irish annals, including the Annals of Ulster and the Annals of Tigernach, record the death of Bishop Mo Ling in 696 or 697, and his principal feast is kept on 17 June.

A substantial body of legend gathered around his name. The most politically charged story concerns the Bóroma, the cattle tribute historically claimed by the Uí Néill kings of Tara from Leinster. In the tale, Mo Ling obtains from the high king Finnachta Fledach a remission of the tribute, sometimes by a verbal trick involving the ambiguous Irish word lá (a day, or the Day of Judgment). He is also a central figure in the vernacular saga Buile Shuibhne (The Frenzy of Sweeney), in which the mad king Suibhne Geilt takes refuge at Tech Moling, is given milk by the saint, and dies and is buried there. Other stories describe Mo Ling digging a millrace with his own hands, encounters with the devil, and acts of healing and prophecy. Poems in early Irish are attributed to him, though their actual authorship remains uncertain.

His cult remained centred on St Mullin's, where he is believed to have died and been buried, and it is reflected in Leinster martyrologies and later ecclesiastical calendars. The Martyrology of Óengus and the Martyrology of Tallaght commemorate him on 17 June. He was venerated as a saint in the pre-Congregation period of the Western Church, without a recorded papal canonization of the later medieval type. The monastic ruins at St Mullin's, the place-name itself, and the survival of the Book of Mulling and of vernacular tales such as Buile Shuibhne have kept his memory in Irish religious and literary history, even though many details of his career remain those of hagiography rather than of strictly documented biography.
