Biography

Short Description

Saint Modestus, remembered as Modestus of Carantania and as the Apostle of Carantania, was an eighth-century missionary bishop who laboured among the Alpine Slavs of the principality of Carantania in the Eastern Alps. Contemporary evidence for his life is sparse and almost entirely dependent on a single later source, the Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum, a Salzburg tract composed around 870 to assert the church of Salzburg’s historic rights of mission and jurisdiction in Carantania and among the Bavarians. That text presents Modestus as a bishop sent from Salzburg. Later tradition, followed by most modern historians, holds that he was an Irish monk and a member of the circle of Irish clergy gathered around Virgil (Fergal), the Irish-born bishop of Salzburg. No reliable source records Modestus’s year or place of birth, his parentage, or the details of his formation.

The political setting of his mission was the incorporation of Carantania into the Bavarian sphere in the mid-eighth century. Duke Boruth of the Carantanians accepted Bavarian protection, probably against Avar pressure, and sent his son Gorazd and his nephew Hotimir to Bavaria, where they were instructed in the Christian faith. After Boruth’s death Gorazd ruled briefly; Hotimir then became duke, conventionally dated to the early 750s, and as a Christian prince he asked Bishop Virgil of Salzburg for priests. Virgil sent Modestus with the status of chorepiscopus, a missionary or rural bishop without a fully organized diocesan see of his own, accompanied by four priests named Latinus, Iohannes, Quincyanus, and Ekihardus, and a deacon named Giso. Their charge was to preach, baptize, and establish churches among a Slavic people whose conversion was still recent and incomplete.

The Conversio states that Modestus and his companions consecrated a church in honour of Saint Mary, which scholarship identifies with the church of Maria Saal (Slovene: Gospa Sveta) on the Zollfeld, north of present-day Klagenfurt in Carinthia. That church became the chief ecclesiastical centre of Carantanian Christianity. Other churches were also dedicated, including one at a place called Liburnia, often linked with the vicinity of ancient Teurnia on the upper Drava. Modestus thus provided the first sustained episcopal presence in Carantania, always as a representative of Salzburg rather than as the founder of an independent bishopric. The mission belonged to the wider eighth-century effort, associated with the Bavarian church and the Bavarian dukes, to extend Latin Christianity eastward among the Slavs.

Modestus died while Hotimir still ruled, therefore not later than 769, and in any event before the pagan uprising that followed Hotimir’s death and is usually placed about 772, when Bavarian military force was used to reimpose Christian and Bavarian authority. The Conversio does not give the exact year, place, or manner of Modestus’s death, nor does it record his burial. Later pious tradition associates him with Maria Saal, but this is not confirmed by early evidence. After the suppression of the revolt, Salzburg resumed and expanded its work in the region; in 811 Charlemagne fixed a boundary between Salzburg and the Patriarchate of Aquileia along the Drava, a settlement that presupposed the earlier Salzburg mission in which Modestus had taken part. Modestus was venerated locally as the apostle of the Carantanians and as an early evangelizer of the people of Carinthia and of the ancestors of the Slovenes. His cult is of the early medieval type that predates formal papal canonization processes; no papal act of canonization is known. Beyond the Conversio and the later liturgical memory, almost nothing can be verified about his character, any writings, or specific miracles, and legendary accretions should be treated with caution.
