Biography

Short Description

Modwald is the name-form under which the seventh-century bishop of Trier more often called Modoald, Modowald, or Modoaldus sometimes appears in later compilations. He belongs to the aristocratic episcopate of Merovingian Austrasia, the generation of prelates whose authority rested as much on kinship with the mayors of the palace and the royal court as on the ancient Roman prestige of their sees. Later hagiographical and genealogical notices identify him as brother of Saint Itta (also Iduberga or Ida), the wife of Pepin of Landen, and therefore as uncle of Saint Gertrude of Nivelles, Saint Begga, and Grimoald the Elder. A sister named Severa is likewise associated with him and is said to have ruled a community of religious women. These family links are widely repeated in medieval and early modern tradition and fit the known pattern of Austrasian elite networks, but they are not documented by strictly contemporary charters or narrative sources. Claims that he was born in Aquitaine or Gascony likewise circulate in older saint-lists; they cannot be verified and should be treated as unconfirmed. His public career is located on the Moselle, at Trier.

He held the bishopric of Trier during the reign of King Dagobert I. Modern reference works usually place the beginning of his episcopate in the 620s (dates around 622 or 626 are commonly offered) and its end in the 640s. Trier was one of the senior sees of former Roman Gaul, and a Frankish bishop there stood at the meeting point of Gallo-Roman ecclesiastical memory and the new monastic foundations favoured by the Austrasian court. Modwald is credited with founding or restoring the church and monastery of Saint Symphorian at Trier, which became his burial church, and with using royal favour to endow religious life in the diocese. He is described in later tradition as a counsellor of Dagobert. Independent seventh-century narrative accounts of his administration do not survive; the picture of a reforming, court-connected bishop is reconstructed from later vitae, necrologies, and the institutional memory of Trier. He is not securely attested as a professed member of a named religious order, though the houses he patronised were part of the mixed-rule and emerging Benedictine monasticism of the Frankish kingdoms.

The precise year of his death is not established. Martyrologies assign the day as 12 May and often propose 640; other notices suggest the mid-640s (645 or 648 also appear). He died at Trier and was buried in Saint Symphorian. In the early twelfth century a portion of his relics was translated to the Benedictine abbey of Helmarshausen, which spread his commemoration beyond the Moselle into Saxony and neighbouring churches. Trier remained the centre of the cult. He is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 12 May. No papal canonization in the later juridical sense is recorded; like most Merovingian saints he belongs to a pre-congregation cultus that grew from local episcopal and monastic veneration. No stable list of patronages of places, trades, illnesses, or causes is attached to his name in the principal modern directories.

Because the contemporary dossier is thin, popular biographies tend to inflate legendary kinship and court anecdotes into a full life. A cautious account can say only that a noble Austrasian cleric named Modoaldus (Modwald/Modowald) governed the church of Trier in the second quarter of the seventh century, that he was remembered as a founder at Saint Symphorian and as a figure close to Dagobert’s circle, that his family was later woven into the pedigree of the Pippinids, and that his feast on 12 May and his relics at Trier and Helmarshausen carried his name into the medieval calendars of the German church.
